For a long time I did not dare to start this description, because it is very difficult to talk about things that are ideal by definition, but not clear to everyone and not right away. How can you tell about the impression you got in the best concert hall from listening to Vivaldi performed by the von Karajan orchestra? How do you describe the experience of flying a Gulfstream 650? Or a winter evening by the fireplace in a cozy and beautiful house on the lake, in the best company while huge snowflakes are silently settling outside the window?
That's how it is. This car is not what we are used to. There was simply nothing like this before. She can't be compared with her classmates, it's just another kung fu. In fairness, there are also enough shortcomings in it - it, of course, is not perfect. Just talking about the new XC90 in the usual vein of a test drive is not working.

Volvo has always been different from others. Premium, but a little out of the way. While the "big German three" were arguing over who was more prestigious, richer, more athletic, the Swedes with manic concentration worked on safety and comfort inside. At some point, it even put the stamp of family and oldness on the brand, but in the 90s and 2000s, with the launch of “charged” variants and a breakthrough in design, the brand became significantly younger.
The main thing is that Volvo is always authentic and recognizable. Whether it's the old 240, the S80, which is timeless in any body, or the new XC90, we recognize it in the stream by the headlights, by the grille, by the characteristic "shoulder" on the body, by the laconic strokes and lines.

Anyone interested in cars has probably already read the XC90 tests with a bunch of petty quibbles in various publications. So: don't believe it. From the first moment you get into this car, the little things stop worrying. Silence, comfort, beautiful interior with interesting details, but without pretentiousness. The music sounds pleasant, somewhere in the depths a high-torque diesel engine hums barely audibly. Streets float by, and it feels like the car is designed for you personally - everything is in place, everything is convenient, everything is immediately clear.
Everyone who has traveled to Volvo knows that it is always "at home" here and never gets numb.
If I were buying the XC90, I would opt for the light-colored interior trim. But even with black and brown it is very cozy. Everything that is possible is sheathed with leather, and the rest is wood, moreover matte, pleasant to the touch. The aroma in the cabin is indescribable. And very nice lighting at night.

There are very few buttons and twists in the cabin. At hand - the original engine switch lever, as if from a Cartier showcase; a drum for changing the driving mode, and a neat gear selector with a pleasant illumination. Several buttons on the steering wheel and steering column switches, buttons on the door - power windows, mirrors, seat memory. On center console- only basic control of "music", "emergency gang" and heating.
The fact is that all control over a million of various systems is given to a huge "tablet" in the center of the panel, in which the proprietary Sensus system lives. The interface is intuitive, understands "paging", swipes, you can drag and drop large icons to your liking. If you learned how to use your iPad without prompting, it will be even easier. On the second day, I quickly and accurately found the settings, menus and functions I needed. The screen can be used with gloves, and comes with a cute cloth to wipe the display :)
Probably, those who buy such a Volvo do not eat shawarma in the car, and wash their hands often, so the display will not be stained. In general, the car is clearly not for people who like a mess and clutter. I personally didn't even want to put a radar detector and a telephone on the panel - the interior is so finished that foreign elements in it are like a speck in the eye.
Directly in front of the driver is a "virtual" instrument panel. Volvo is one of the pioneers in this regard, there is not a single "analog" scale or arrow here - the instruments are "drawn" on a huge matte display. Of course, you can choose the style and colors of the display, the output of variable data, the type of onboard computer, navigation, and more. Directly in front of the gaze is the head-up display, showing basic data directly in the field of view, as if hanging in the air above the hood. In addition to the speed and navigator hints, there are also shown road signs that act at a specific point in the journey. They are read and recognized by a separate camera so that the driver is always aware of the applicable restrictions.

You can talk about "bells and whistles" for a very long time, the list of options will take more than one page. The main thing that impressed me personally was the feeling of a "living" helper who unobtrusively makes life easier. Did you receive a message in WhatsApp or do you need to take a photo? Not a problem, he will "steer" for you for a few seconds, not allowing you to "enter" somewhere or leave the lane even in a turn. In a traffic jam, he will follow the car in front, gently accelerating and braking when needed. On the track - even more so. He will not allow to rebuild into someone, "resting" on the steering wheel and prompting with lights. And in the event of a possible collision, a red light flashes in front of his eyes, the belts are pulled, as if he says "beware"! Well, if you overslept that too, he will urgently slow down himself.
This has happened before, I have already seen all this on the XC70 and V40XC, but here the work seemed more polished and less noticeable, just like you had an extra pair of eyes, hands and ears. The disadvantage is that when you get behind the wheel later ordinary car, one may not immediately understand that he is deprived of this help, and hesitating to do something. Good - you quickly get used to it.

Among the others interesting features- the car is connected to the Internet all the time. It has its own SIM card and 4G, this allows you to get navigation with traffic jams, online radio, emergency assistance and realize remote communication with the machine. The Volvo On Call app is installed on the smartphone, and from anywhere in the world you can find out where the car is, how many degrees inside and outside, how much fuel is in it, start heating, check if the doors are closed.

Everything is thought out for passengers too. Comfortable seats (all heated), huge legroom and overhead, behind - its own climate control, pull-out curtains, table, 220V socket, and on top - a huge transparent ceiling through which you can see the sky.
The passenger sitting in front (as well as the driver) has access to a built-in and varied massage :) It is very relaxing in long journey... Well, I already spoke about the seats - they are very comfortable. Everything is adjustable: width, the severity of lateral support, the length of the cushion under the knees, the angle of inclination, elasticity in the lower back, a million settings.
An excellent Hi-End audio system of the Bowers & Wilkins class works for all the inhabitants of the cabin (the acoustics of this particular brand are installed, for example, at the Abbey Road studio). At the heart is a 12-channel Harman amplifier for 1400 W, 19 speakers, of which 7 are tweeters, 7 are mid-range. 4 midbass and subwoofer.
We checked - any music sounds great, from Dimmu Borgir and Skrillex to Joe Dassin and, of course, The Beatles. For the classics, there is a special sound processor setting - the concert hall profile of the Gothenburg Philharmonic. But in general, there are surprisingly few settings. Apparently, everything is already configured as it should, and there is simply no need to turn the equalizer.

Separately, I would like to note the spaciousness, a huge trunk (of course, with an electric drive) and a huge variety of all kinds of niches, drawers and hiding places. The whole "set of the traveler" lay under the trunk floor - there was a "double bottom", 4 rather big suitcases, a couple of large bags and several bags with food lay on top. And closed with a regular curtain. The question remains - well, how does it all go? Here the answer is simple - 225 diesel high-torque horses for two tons of weight through an eight-speed "automatic" is what you need. There is no need for the driver of such a car to tear off the traffic light, and overtaking on the highway is easy and effortless. Overclocking does not make you faint, but it is always enough. Average consumption for 3000 km in mixed conditions - 7.5 liters per hundred.
Of course, there is a question about the motor. 2 turbocharged liters, 225 forces are removed from them .. how long will it live? Let's hope for the engineering skill of the Swedish designers, but I would advise the owners to change the oil twice as often as it is supposed to, and refuel only at the most prestigious proven gas stations.
By handling: everything is calm, predictable, at ease. The machine is obedient, but not sharp. You don't get tired of it, but of course, in high-speed connections you can feel the mass and height of the car. Is not sport car, but you can't call it a roll either - the handling and sensitivity are exactly what you expect from this car. Tight, comfortable, understandable. You can customize the steering effort, brake responsiveness and ease of the gas pedal, but it is best to set the "comfort" mode and just enjoy.

On the suspension, everything is not so simple. On the one hand, the adjustable air suspension is very comfortable and resilient. But on seriously bumpy roads it shakes decently, and this sudden exit from the "comfort zone" hits the nerves. It's a pity to kill a car in potholes! Probably the point is huge wheels(tires 275/45 R20). I would leave the base 18 wheels, for Russian realities this is more justified. But small irregularities such as tram rails or joints on bridges, the car flies by unnoticed - apparently, the suspension is set under the cobins no more than European paving stones, and here it is "at a height."

Of course, we did not test the cross-country ability :) Yes, the air suspension allows you to raise the car, the ground clearance is large, but .. why? Who would think of kneading dirt on such a machine?
It will pass on a country dirt road, even on a snow-covered one, that is, if you go to the country house in the winter or go snowboarding - everything is fine, but there are other cars for the mud. On rear axle traction is transmitted through a very fast clutch with a preload - the fifth generation Haldex, the same are on many Audi and VW, this is a good and proven solution.

The main disadvantage of this car is the price! Previous generation it cost much less, and perhaps Volvo should have just come up with a different name for this model - XC120, for example)) Because the car is completely different, and plays a class higher. Basic version costs more than 3 million rubles, our version Volvo XC90 D5 Inscription pulls four and a half! Tuareg is far behind, next to Audi Q7 and BMW X5 and slightly more expensive - Toyota Land cruiser 200.
And here it is worth pondering. First, the XC90 with relatively equal trim levels is still slightly more affordable than direct competitors. Secondly, to be honest - a week after the test I got into Q7 and was a little taken aback - but then why are they asking so much? Materials, interior design, even soundproofing ... everything is simpler, much simpler. Thirdly, I think the statistics of thefts here will clearly be in favor of Volvo, which means the cost of comprehensive insurance and irreplaceable nerve cells.
This is not "maximum speed". This is the speed at which you can relax and communicate on pleasant topics, under a quiet background of beautiful music.
But the main thing is different. They are simply not competitors. The same person will not consider buying the XC90 and, say, the X5. The new Volvo is not a movie for everyone. The owner of this car, for all its success and security, does not care about show-off, concepts, "how much rushing", tinsel and the amount of chrome. He has peace in his soul, everything is good and correct, he enjoys beautiful, aesthetic things and knows a lot about big travels. The XC90 is designed for the inside, not the outside.
Year of issue: 2015
Engine: 2.0 (228 hp) Checkpoint: A8
I have been waiting for him for three years. Before him, all my cars were Japanese SUVs. I desired the "ninety" when I drove my wife's car XC60 and waited for the premiere.
I bought it in November 2015 when the dollar jumped up. I kept the money for the initial payment of 50% in dollars, therefore I won well. The rest of the cost was taken over by the bank. I TAKE it exactly as a heavy burden, because I really doubt whether he beats off the 18% per annum received from me with such an increase in the exchange rate.
In short, I think that the somewhat overpriced "ninety" is perfectly compensated by the "bad weather" on the foreign exchange market. At least it costs me much cheaper than even buyers in Europe (IMHO) ..
The package is almost complete, including a sunroof, 7 seats and all those radar safety gizmos. Diesel.
General impressions - a complete thrill!
How it goes, jumping over the St. Petersburg tram rails (air suspension), how cleverly it switches high beam on the track and helpfully illuminates the roadside at the same time.
A couple of times he already helped me out with the emergency braking system, when I gape in traffic jams, and once specifically saved me on the track. In all these cases, collisions are possible and there would not have been, but his earlier reaction to similar situations makes you feel more confident and safer on the road.
For almost half a year, of course, it pleases appearance... In fact, people turn their heads onto my ship. I chose an excellent color - dark, but not boring black, and the chameleon is black and blue.
I have already come to reflash the car's brains. The playing of music from the iPhone was buggy and the heating in auto mode tried to work, turning on the fan as much as possible, it was noisy. Eliminated. But now, for some reason, the iPhone has ceased to be read altogether, you need to go again for a flashing.
Even after updating the program, the navigator began to work strangely: when dialing addresses located on very long streets (for example, Obvodny Canal embankment), it does not want to enter the house number until you indicate the nearest intersection with some street or a certain interval of this Obvodny Canal. Very hemorrhoids, in fact, a couple of times already had to spit on the regular navigator and go on the iPhone. I think this is normal, the car is really too smart, all these brain problems will gradually disappear with each new update.
Special impressions:
The high beam in AUTO mode very intelligently turns off exactly those LEDs that blind the oncoming car. Exactly as needed, no more and no less. For the first time, I was shocked by this clever behavior of the ninety.
I have already written about emergency braking in traffic jams and on the highway. Reads the markup. It helps on the track. I turn it off in the city. Do not overestimate the speed limit sign reading function. When traveling in Finland, this really helps: the sound of a key on the piano and while driving pops up the icon of a specific speed limit. In the city, too, I turn it off, everything is clear here.
Adaptive cruise control is also a SONG. On a straight track, when using it, a strange thought arises: Why am I here at all as a driver needed?
The car is polite - it crouches when disembarking passengers. However, it is somehow strange. It happens that she has already muffled, left, slammed the door, and only after she deigns to sit down)))
On the whole, I am satisfied, I enjoy operating and owning this device.
Advantages of the Volvo XC90 D5:
Appearance. Air suspension. Adaptive cruise control. System emergency braking and other useful electronics.
Disadvantages Volvo XC90 D5:
The skin is good, but after 4 months I saw on driver's seat on the left rise, creases and deformation of the saddle itself appear. It's probably not even about the skin, but the narrowness of the seat (I'm a fairly large man).
Opening function back door cool, but doesn't always work. Once I was even roughly disgraced: in front of my acquaintances, I defiantly tried to open the tailgate with a clever look in this way, waved my foot several times - and nichrome, it didn’t work.
The plastic backs of the front seats from the passenger side are a little straining. But on the other hand, it is easier to take care of them. Little son constantly stains these places with his boots.
The high-performance SUV segment is growing every year. This tidbit of the pie has long been tasted by the Germans and Swedes. First generation Volvo The XC90 debuted in 2002 and immediately hit the spot with many, especially American customers. In total, the Swedish crossover has found more than 635,000 buyers in the world. The car has become famous for its safety, comfort and versatile interior that can accommodate up to 7 people. The hopes for the second generation of the model are even higher, especially since the company spent about $ 11 billion on the development of the new Volvo XC90.
Volvo, wishing to slightly change the image of its flagship product, decided to upgrade a number of electronic onboard systems, change the style and offer dynamic yet economical powertrains. The result was brilliant. The Volvo XC90 looks very modern and heralds the beginning of a new era of design for the brand.

XC90 significantly exceeds in size Volkswagen Touareg... The Swedish SUV is 15 cm longer, 10 cm wider and 4 cm higher.
Both SUVs have different front end designs. The Scandinavians put on futuristic lines with a huge grill and vertical chrome grills and also completely LED lightening... The German competitor has more conservative forms - a nod to those who value elegance and modesty.

5 years of development differences are noticeable, first of all, inside. Despite the very high quality finishing materials used in Tuareg, XC90 is undoubtedly better. It offers many more color combinations and interior decoration details. In addition to decorative elements made of natural crystal, you can find aluminum, wood and other high quality materials.
Heated, ventilated and fully adjustable leather-covered seats make it easy to get into a comfortable driving position in both SUVs. Bowers & Wilkins Sound System top-end configuration XC90 - important advantage... The clarity and quality of sound coming from 10 speakers will transport passengers directly to the Philharmonic Hall. This is definitely money well spent.
An entertaining solution is the control panel in the form of a tablet in the central part of the front panel. Its interface resembles the work of modern smartphones and does not have any particular difficulties in management. However, knowing all the functions will require dedication, a lot of time, and regular screen cleanliness in order for the sensors to work properly. Another novelty ode - all-round cameras. The 360-degree picture is invaluable when maneuvering in the city and in the parking lot.
Two-row seating is plentiful - the headroom is comparable to that of a VW. The third row will comfortably accommodate people up to 170 cm tall.

Volkswagen, as befits a flagship car, demonstrates a very high level quality. Yes, there are no natural wood or polished aluminum inserts, but all the plastic is nice and soft to the touch. The set of additional gadgets is not as rich as that of the Swedish competitor, but it is quite enough for moving around with comfort.
For diesel lovers, Volvo has prepared two 2-liter turbocharged units. The first generates 190 hp. and 450 Nm of torque, the second - 225 hp. and 470 nm. 4-cylinder twin-turbo most powerful version accelerates the nearly 2 ton car to 100 km / h in 7.8 seconds and guarantees a very decent elasticity. The engine is quite economical, consuming an average of 10-11 liters in the city, and just over 7 liters on the highway.
Despite its impressive dimensions, the Volvo XC90 behaves like compact crossover... All thanks to a low center of gravity, good weight distribution and 4-way air suspension. The difference in ground clearance between the sport and off-road modes is about 8 cm. In the first mode, the car obediently follows the driver's commands, is neutral in corners, and the body does not show any tendency to roll.
However, the most enjoyable is the Comfort mode. Steering although it loses a little in accuracy, but despite the 20-inch low-profile rims, the suspension effectively suppresses bumps of all stripes. When driving with high speed on the highway, you can appreciate the excellent sound insulation.
German engineers, among others, offered a 3-liter 6-cylinder V-twin turbodiesel. The engine develops 245 hp. and 550 Nm of torque available in the 1750-2750 rpm range. The 3-liter engine accelerates the more than 2-ton SUV to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds.

Compared to Volvo, the German SUV has better dynamics, what is the merit of a more capacious power unit... Volkswagen Touareg can be equipped with air suspension if the client wishes. On a straight line, the Tuareg demonstrates good stability, but when cornering, one has to admit the superiority of the Volvo XC90. The test VW was equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels and courageously hid any irregularities - both holes in the asphalt and protruding roots on forest roads.
In the city, everyone will like good visibility from the driver's Touareg seats... A classic rear-view camera will help maneuver in the parking lot, and pneumatics, which allows you to increase ground clearance up to 300 mm. Fuel consumption in the urban cycle is within 10-12 liters, and on the highway on-board computer shows no more than 9 liters.
Ultimately, Volvo seems to be more "ripe". Air suspension handles dynamic cornering better, the interior offers a higher level of finish and variety of materials, and the cabin itself is slightly larger. For the Tuareg, it is worth recognizing a victory in a smooth ride on paved paths and a higher ability to overcome obstacles (due to higher ground clearance).

Volvo XC90 with 225 hp turbo diesel and 8-speed automatic transmission gear is estimated at 3,300,000 rubles, and the top-end R-Design - at 3,800,000 rubles. Per diesel Volkswagen Touareg ask for a little less: from 2,900,000 rubles to 3,100,000 rubles.

... We appreciated the advantages and disadvantages of the XC90 D5 during the rally from Arkhangelsk to Moscow, timed to coincide with the "diesel advent".
Like both Swedish station wagon, the diesel XC90 is equipped with a five-cylinder inline engine Volvo D5 with a working volume of 2.4 liters. Thanks to the new electronic unit control and modified turbine with blades variable geometry the aluminum motor produces 185 hp. At the same time, the XC90 engine management system is tuned in such a way that not only provides the highest power characteristics with minimal fuel consumption, but also artificially lowers the upper limit of engine speed from 6000 (as in front-wheel drive station wagons) to 5000 min-1. The red zone generally starts at 4500 min-1. As a result, an extra sector is cut off, and the range of motor operation is narrowed closer to the fork from 1500 to 2700 min-1. In this area, a maximum torque of 400 Nm is achieved.
In terms of environmental friendliness, the Swedish diesel will give odds to many competitors. Even as standard Russian market the motor is equipped with a maintenance-free particulate filter with a catalytic base of precious metals... This allows all vehicles supplied to Russia with diesel engine D5 meet the stringent Euro 4 standards. In addition, almost all diesel Volvo supplied to Russia (starting with the cheapest Optima package) will be equipped with pre-heater with a timer. On a frosty winter morning, this option will greatly facilitate the life of a Russian driver. In general, the operation of diesel engines in conditions low temperatures Volvo paid Special attention... Mathematical calculation of the cross-section of the fuel line made it possible to practically nullify the possibility of wax crystallization. Together with a multilevel heating system for filters and fuel lines, this allows the Swedish diesel engine to start easily even at -37 ° C.
Overall to Russian debut Volvo has been preparing its diesel engines for almost a year and a half. All this time, to check the fuel quality, the D5 engines were run in Russian roads... Periodically, the "Russified Swedes" were sent to the plant in Gothenburg for "clinical examination" and adaptation to Russian conditions... As a result, the quality of Russian fuel was found to be satisfactory. But at the same time, Volvo engineers made a very unexpected verdict: it is better to refuel away from Moscow and the Moscow region. As it turned out, as we get closer to the Russian capital, the quality of Russian diesel fuel decreases markedly.
Among other advantages of the D5, the rally "From Arkhangelsk to Arkhangelskoe" was intended to demonstrate unpretentiousness Volvo engines To Russian fuel... Therefore, on the way to Moscow, for the purity of the experiment, we specially refueled on the dispensers of three different oil companies. And there were no questions about the quality of the fuel. The Swedish engine consumes Russian diesel fuel for a sweet soul, but by no means with an animal appetite. With a little more economical driving 1,300 km to Moscow could be covered with just two 65-liter tanks: mixed cycle is 9 liters per 100 km, but since most the distance we walked at speeds over 120 km / h, the engine of our XC90 with a six-speed automatic gearbox consumed an average of 11.4 liters per hundred. At the same time, the consumption of the gasoline XC90 2.5T (taken in the run specifically for comparing fuel consumption) turned out to be one and a half times higher - more than 17 l / 100 km.
The Kholmogory track is the best fit for car tests. It seems that you find yourself on a multi-kilometer auto-polygon with different types cover. Occasionally you come across pieces of fresh asphalt as smooth as glass. But the basis of the Arkhangelsk tract is made up of hastily patched bumpy roads that shake out the soul, which are now and then interspersed with sections with shallow and practically harmless potholes for tires. On that surface, the Volvo's suspension feels a little stiff, and despite its wide track, the short XC90 has to be caught up all the time. Although, on the other hand, at a speed of 150 km / h on such a road, except for tests, no one drives.
Lomonosov's way
Nine cars started the rally in Arkhangelsk. In addition to seven diesel engines, we took two Volvo with gasoline engines: XC90 2.5T and XC70 3.2. The next day, having covered more than 1,300 km, all nine Volvo made a safe finish at the Arkhangelskoye estate near Moscow. Average fuel consumption for diesel cars was 11 liters per 100 km, for gasoline - 17.
It is noteworthy that the route of the motor rally "From Arkhangelsk to Arkhangelskoe", passing through Kholmogory, Velsk, Vologda and Yaroslavl, almost exactly repeated the route that Mikhailo Vasilyevich Lomonosov took to Moscow in 1730. And it is doubly symbolic that on the eve of the 300th anniversary of the great Russian scientist, this path was done just behind the wheel of Swedish cars! After all, it was the Royal Swedish Academy in 1760 that was the first in Europe to grant Lomonosov an academician degree. Thus, two and a half centuries ago, the Swedes were the first to recognize the talent of a Russian scientist. And 250 years later, his native Kholmogory became the starting point for Russian recognition of Swedish cars with diesel engines.
Driving
The steering wheel, like most SUVs, is somewhat empty, but to work automatic transmission it is impossible to find fault. No unnecessary shifting or jerking. Everything is extremely clear and reasonable.
Salon
A somewhat outdated but practical design in January 2008 will be complemented by a retractable monitor navigation system at the top of the center console.
Comfort
Small vibrations inherent in diesel engines on the steering wheel and pedals, of course, are present, but in general, the engine runs smoothly and quite quietly.
Security
The car is far from young, however passive safety at a very high level, which is traditional for Volvo.
Price
Average XC90 s diesel engine(from 1,444,800 rubles) is $ 1,500 cheaper than a gasoline one in a similar configuration, not to mention huge savings on fuel.
Advantages and disadvantages
Low fuel consumption, high environmental friendliness and wide rpm range with maximum torque.
The accelerator pedal has a noticeable idle speed.
Our opinion
Solid appearance and low consumption fuel, coupled with good performance characteristics make the diesel Volvo XC90 a real boon for the Russian market, especially the regional one. The car is definitely worth the asking price. Moreover, it is one of best family car, and if the family is inclined to save money, then a diesel Volvo is the right option.
