My brothers planning on buying one. Ive steered him away from the 2.0tdi due to constant readings of DPF issues etc. Anything i should know about the 1.9tdi? Its a 2007 model. No alternatives please, hes a 21year old and wants a black golf, you know how it is. J4CKO

My mother in law had an auto estate, it was kind of more than the sum of its parts, it felt reasonbly perky in normal driving until you realised that was it, you had already had all it had to give, workmanlike, does the job but by no means fast, a hell of a lot bette rthan the SDI non turbo models which I assmued stands for "Slowly Does It". elephantstone

He could always get it remapped.. confused_buyer

There is a range of 1.9 TDI engines from about then (it has a particular 3 digit code) which are known for big problems. Can't remember which but I'm sure you can Google it.Other than those particular ones the 1.9 is generally OK as they go. elephantstone

My mate has the Mk5 Golf 1.9TDI, it's got over 150k miles on it and is doing well with regular servicing, He also had it remapped to just below 140BHP I think. His only problem is the Dual Mass Flywheel is on the way out. elephantstone

Although just like many other diesels IMHO :-)Getting from 50-70 with the hammer down feels like you're torturing the poor thing and really isn't much faster than if you were getting up to motorway speeds using the low-down torque rather the top-end.Think of it as a 1.6 diesel that was actually a 1.9 because that's pretty much what it was for a variety of tedious reasons. My sister has an '08 Match 5dr with the 105PS TDi engine. It's well equipped and comfortable, although extremely agricultural-sounding - particularly at motorway cruising speed where it has a nasty drone to it unless you can bring yourself to keep the speed down to <70mph. Just don't rely on the speedo to gauge your speed for that though because it's a good 9mph optimistic so you can go "85" and only actually be doing 76mph Still, my sis has had hers over 2 years now and nothing has gone wrong with it despite having her as a driver (no mechanical sympathy, no respect for speed limits) and it has averaged 46mpg in that time. I think I'd be looking for the 100 or 130bhp PD engines - far less trouble, weren't they? ModernAndy

Still looking for a car for my brother. Found a likely candidate... BXE engine code, the one thats meant to be the worst. What 2005-2007 golf diesel is the most reliable? BGarside

Some buying advice here:http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/volkswagen/go...I believe the later TDIs have piezoelectric injectors which can be problematic and costly to replace. Usual diesel hassles of DMF and particle filter too I guess. Was it the BXE that had the connecting rod failures? Earlier versions of the 1.9TDI are supposedly more reliable but of course come in an older car which is potentially more hassle in other ways. I have a 2004 1.9 TDI (150hp version, in a Seat) with solenoid injectors and no DPF, but other issues with the car have cost me plenty...Goes well though, especially after remapping cobra kid

I've got a 2007 one. Bulletproof engine but a bit agricultural. I'm getting about 56mpg (indicated) as the long term average. Grimezy93

Surely he could get a much nicer Leon for the price and will effectively be the same car? Don't use the old "21 and wants a black golf", I'm 20 and have enough of a brain to know there's better things to spend money on. I suppose he has an iPhone as well because they're 'cool'?He'd even be better off going for an A3. Might be a couple of years older than the Golf but more appeal to it in my opinion. Insurance shouldn't be an issue either, I get quoted about £600 for the 1.6 petrol A3's, haven't looked at the Diesels insurance-wise for a year or so though, not sure if it would make much difference. We have a MK2 leon with a BXE engine and I'd agree with what's been said. It feels more than 105bhp and is comfortable up and over normal motorway speeds. It is economical but feels rougher than other TDIs I've been in. The wife's had it from new and I've serviced it since it was 3 years old. Nothing's gone wrong except the Abs pump. A common fault is oil I the induction system that gathers near the bottom inter cooler pipe. I s
t myself but apparently it's common and doesn't affect the engineIf it were me I'd be going Octavia VRS (or even Fabia VRS tdi) over the golf. I guess they are more expensive for insurance though.
