[report] [news]Saturday 12th September 2020quotequote all hi guys, hopefully someone can help me. This is my 2007 VW Polo S 1.4 (80bhp) petrol and manual, i had this weird noise that appears only when starting the car and goes away after around 2 minutes. The engine and gearbox oil got changed not even 1000 miles ago, alternator belt was changed 1500 miles ago.If i turn on the car after 1 hour of being off after being used and "warmed up" there is no noise so i wonder what it could be. Thanks in advance for all the help, i left a link down below with the problem.https://youtu.be/nURFp_H3snE

[report] [news]Saturday 12th September 2020quotequote all Did the noise exist before the recent service work or start when it was done?

[report] [news]Saturday 12th September 2020quotequote all Are you trying to identify the ticking noise? That sounds a little like a noisy tappet - you could have one that is bleeding down and taking a while to pump up. Does the frequency go up with engine speed?

[report] [news]Sunday 13th September 2020quotequote all Hi Thanks for the answers! The problem started since i bought the car, when i went to view it i think the dealer let it warm up prior to me coming so that i wouldn't be able to hear the noise. Also i researched the tapped and seeing other videos it does look like that's the problem. Before going to work this morning i tried to rev it with the noise and it was increasing as the revs were going higher (same frequency) also i noticed that if i depress the clutch i have less noise but that it's most likely the clutch release bearing (or a bad clutch in general). Thanks again for all the replies i really appreciate it.Also if you have any other suggestions or questions please do comment as it would be appreciated.

[report] [news]Sunday 13th September 2020quotequote all As you bought it from a dealer stop trying to find the issue take it back to them and get them to sort both problems.

[report] [news]Sunday 13th September 2020quotequote all Thanks mate, unfortunately i bought the car 9 months ago and it is my first car so being a newbie I thought that the sound was normal as it was winter and i heard that engines rattle a bit before being warmed up, so stupid of me. I use my car almost daily for work and i am planning to buy a new car so i guess it isn't really worth it as they could say that i damaged the car during my ownership and other than that the car drives nicely so it was just that thing that was bugging me.Anyways thanks for the suggestion smile

The hydraulic lifter might just be full of crap from poor oil changes.

[report] [news]Sunday 13th September 2020quotequote all If it's within the warranty period I'd definitely take it back to the seller. If it's out of warranty, no big deal. It doesn't sound like a serious problem. If it's a ticking lifter that goes away after a few minutes it is unlikely to do any harm.Mention it to the mechanic next time it goes in for a service and see if they can confirm what it is. If it is a lifter, some oil system cleaner might help.

[report] [news]Sunday 13th September 2020quotequote all Unfortunately the car came with no service history (i know i know) but the price was really good hence the purchase. I service the car myself (with the help of my dad) but i think it would be worth it just to go to a mechanical and let them have a look just to have some peace of mind. Thanks again for the answers smile

[report] [news]Tuesday 15th September 2020quotequote all Not sure about your fault, but how a car Starts Cold is a really important part of the buying process......next time you buy, feel the Exhaust Manifold / Downpipe (in the engine bay*) having specifically asked the Vendor if the car's 'Cold'. If the Manifold / Downpipe is warm, the Vendor's telling you Porkies and you should be at least half way to walking away from it as a prospective purchase. Personally, I prefer to buy privately, I think its easier to get a view fof whether its an honest car.
  • don't feel the tailpipe, a brief start won't be enough to warm the back end of the exhaust
