bert0211-04-2016, 09:24 PMI was just about home this afternoon and the "Check Alternator" warning popped up. It followed with the battery light coming on and the ABS warning flashing. I also I lost ALL dash lights, radio, speedo A/C, etc. if i let it coast everything comes back and battery light goes away as soon as i put my foot down the littlest bit it happens again using multimeter car is 12.7v off 13.2v on idle with HL on at 3grand it got to 20v and blew the HL globes 14v on idle with HL off due to above ;) sounds like a regulator issue does this mean i have to replace the whole alternator? i pulled the bash plate off and the wiring is tight all seems to be in good order. looks like a prick to change over too, the ecotech are in a nice spot. is there a how to to remove one of these? i do have an oil leak i was thinking it was rear main seal but could also be front main seal as the alternator has oil residue on it too is this a big problem? white lie11-04-2016, 10:07 PMThey usually get covered in power steering fluid from it being directly above rather than oil. They're not overly difficult to change, pull out the fans (takes 2 minutes) and you will have a lot more room. Actually, I don't think you will get it out without pulling them out. It has to come out from the top, you won't get it out the bottom. I found it a lot easier to pull it out with the bracket, change it over to the new one and put it all in together. I believe you can get the regulator separate but have never changed them. bert0211-04-2016, 10:56 PMmine is definitely engine oil. hope it fixes it. is it going to affect it driving it for a few days until the part arrives? ill replace the whole thing just incase rather only have to pull it out once. could a bad battery cause it to over volt or is it just bad alternator? Disconnect the battery, remove the intake pipe and ECU heat shield to give a bit more room as well, getting the fans out is the biggest pain in the arse (for me at least), otherwise it's a surprisingly easy job, good luck. Cheers, Don't drive it overcharging. It will bugger stuff up and cost a hell of allot more than a alternator to fix If it's a real short drive disconnect alternator side and run on the battery only but really it not worth it. Find alternative means of transport QldKev12-04-2016, 07:49 AMAs with the responses above, do not drive it until it is fixed. A new PCM or BCM costs a lot more than a couple of bus fairs. IJ.12-04-2016, 09:09 AMAt a bare minimum it'll boil the battery dry if it hasn't already... bert0212-04-2016, 04:37 PMchecked it this morning and battery was down to 6v as you would expect it didnt start. i have an alternator and battery on its way will pull it out tonight and have a look hopefully get it in 2 days and fit thursday night macca_77912-04-2016, 05:31 PMIt can be done without pulling the fans. Don't try it like I have in the past out of stubbornness. Its a shit load easier when they're out bert0212-04-2016, 06:44 PMyeah fans took me about 10 minutes to take out. with the gap there i wasn't even thinking of not doing them. last time i took the fans out i ended up undoing top rad hose but persisted this time and got it out without removing hose. if it was a manual it would of been alot easier those auto trans lines get in the way. so its all out wiring looks fine alternator covered in crap. I really should try a thicker oil and see if it doesn't leak everywhere anyone know of the 10w60 on special? Clean down the engine and find the source of the leak or you'll be replacing another alternator. Micks13-04-2016, 05:43 PMI'll bet as others have eluded to the PS reservoir return line over time with engine heat becomes loose & spews atf into the alt. Even a bad Hbal. seal leak on these LS's is not likely to spray oil near the alt. bert0218-04-2016, 10:45 PMinstalled it friday pumps out a nice even 14.5V thanks guys. pulled the old one apart but looks like the regulator isn't easily replaceable Powered by vBulletin® Version 4.2.5 Copyright © 2025 vBulletin Solutions Inc.
