Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is CWRU pursuing CCE accreditation?

We have a long history - since 2002 - of developing coaches in our executive programs. Coaching certification is an increasingly important consideration for those who wish to coach professionally, either within their organizations or independently. Obtaining accreditation for our coaching certificates is important to our mission and, when approved, will aid our participants in obtaining approved training hours toward the Board Certified Coach (BCC) certification.

  • Why should I consider becoming a certified coach?

As the coaching field grows, there is an increasing call for quality and credibility. The Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) provides independent, third-party verification that coaches have met certain requirements of education, training and experience.

  • How do I become a Board Certified Coach (BCC)?

Requirements vary based on the applicant's highest level of college education. See the Center for Credentialing and Education for more information on credential requirements, or call CCE at 336.482.2856 to learn more about the BCC.

  • How many BCC training hours can I earn with a Weatherhead Coaching Certificate?

The Weatherhead Foundations of Coaching Certificate provides 30 BCC training hours. The Weatherhead Coaching Certificate provides 90 BCC hours.

  • I completed the Weatherhead Coaching Certificate in 2016. Can I apply those training hours for the BCC?

Participants who took and completed the coaching certificate, including Coaching for Intentional Development and The Coach Approach: Initiating Dialogues for Better Outcomes, in 2016 who want to obtain BCC credit hours should contact Sharon Norris at 216.368.5149 or via email at sharon.norris@case.edu. All those seeking BCC hours must take and pass an online knowledge exam of the content covered by the coaching certificate.

  • I completed the Weatherhead Coaching Certificate between 2011 and 2015. Can I apply those training hours for the BCC?

Participants who completed the Weatherhead Coaching Certificate between January 2011-February 2015, including The Coach Approach: Initiating Dialogues for Better Outcomes, must re-enroll in and complete Coaching for Intentional Development including all requirements. By this arrangement with CCE, participants will receive a certificate showing they have earned 90 BCC training hours.

  • I completed the Weatherhead Coaching Certificate prior to 2011. Can I apply those training hours for the BCC?

No, participants may not obtain credit for coaching programs they attended prior to 2011.

  • How do I maintain my BCC credential?

After you've earned the BCC, continuing education is an important part of maintaining it (along with other BCC requirements). Join us for other classes in our Weatherhead coaching series to earn continuing education units (CEUs).

  • How does the Board Certified Coach (BCC) credential compare with credentials granted by the International Coach Federation (ICF)?

Both the BCC and the ICF credentials signify one's coaching experience, education and knowledge. Both require a knowledge exam administered by the credentialing authority, which applicants take after they demonstrate experience hours and complete training.

In addition, here are some ways the certifications are distinct:

    • ICF provides several levels of certification. The BCC is a singular designation with optional specialty areas (such as executive/leadership, life coaching).
    • ICF is a membership organization as well as a credentialing authority; the BCC credential is managed by a sole credentialing authority, the CCE.
  • I have already taken some of the requirements of the previous certificate. What should I do?
