Messages 8,325 There's basically no info out there on these speakers. Has anyone tried them? If so, how did you like them, and which amp(s) did you try them with? Thanks in advance for your responses.SnidelyWhiplash

Messages 8,475 I tried one in my 5F2-A amp with a larger cab to accommodate a 12" speaker. Didn't care for it much. My friend however, has one in his similar amp & just loves it!MHG

Messages 8,325 I contacted them and asked if they would sound good with Blackface style amps, but they said they prefer them with Tweeds.timmytVA
Platinum Supporting Member Messages 1,905 I say this as a fan of WGS speakers - I have a Green Beret and Reaper loaded 2x12 under a Ceriatone 18w, and an ET-65 in a Princeton Reverb clone. I dig my friend's WGS Black and Blue. I speaker rolled in my 5E3 clone - Green Beret, Reaper, Red Fang, Celestion Blue, ceramic Blue Dog, and G12Q. The Q was far and away my least favorite. It was very early and very ratty breakup. If that's what you're after, it'll deliver the goods. I ended up keeping the Red Fang in the 5E3. Maybe I just prefer British flavored speakers. I'd like to try some other American options - other WGS, Webers, Jensen, etc - in the 5E3 for giggles and grins. IMHO, YMMV, etc. Timspkrbldr

Messages 247 Personally I don't know that I would recommend the G12Q for Tweed amps. But as said earlier, I guess it depends on what you are wanting to here. When we were developing that speaker the first 4 or 5 prototypes ended up in Princetons that had been converted to 1x12's. I heard a couple of those and thought they sounded great for what it's worth. DeanMHG

Messages 8,325 Seems like I got some pretty bad info from the person that answered my question. Now I'll definitely have to give the G12Q a try. My WGS short list is getting longer and longer!!!! Last edited: Apr 19, 2018bill's guitars
Gold Supporting Member Messages 288 I tried one in my 1964 DR after seeing a blog on it and was not blown away with it-it sounded nothing like my 12k-5 Oxford ,which it was purported to sound like, it instead sounded pretty lame IMHOP-I flipped it quickly -went back to my 1960 P12N Jensen Nnatefackler

Messages 13 I put a G12Q in my 1961 Ampeg Jet and it has broken in and really sounds amazing with this amp. MMonty Gibbon

Messages 5 I see these are still about so figured there's a reasonable chance further units have been field tested over the last few years? I'm not on a tonequest using any given amp(s), volume(s) or music style(s). I ask because the mail order store store I've bought from in the past happens to have these speakers in stock ~ and Celestion are quite pricey here in the UK. I'm never ever dismissive of shrugs in association with: "Dunno, subjective innit". Cheers y'all. IIronHorse6500

Messages 17 We have used WGS speakers exclusively in our amps for years after extensive testing. I have used and played almost every speaker built by man and believe they are truly superior to most out there. But be aware that their American series do in fact sound significantly different than their British series. We won't use for example an ET-65 in a "clean" fender style amp. The G12 series however are incredible in cleaner combos. And the WGS guys are great guys to work with. An American company in Paducah, KT the produce great speakers. IIronHorse6500

Particularly those made in China. You might try one or two too see. I

If you tried one of the British WGS speakers I am not surprised you didn't like it in your DR. We just installed a WGS G12C in a friends 64 Princeton and his custom Heritage amp. He gigs with both three to four nights a week and won't use anything else. I

The difference is remarkable.

Messages 8,325 So I ended up getting a Fat Jimmy(WGS) C1225, which appears to be identical to the C12Q. It's a gorgeous speaker. I really love all of WGS's speakers. I'm using the G12C/S, Black & Blue, ET65, ET10, Vet 10, and all of the Fat Jimmy models. I still need to try some Jupiter speakers as well. EEveningsEmpire

Messages 50 Hey, have you found anything that sounds like the 12k5-6? If not how much should one pay in this day and age for a original 12k5-6?deepcove17

Messages 1,967 I bought a couple of these for a 2 X12 cabinet. They have super early breakup.....as someone else stated kinda ratty breakup. For myself they sound pretty cool for home practice volumes but did not work for me in a band situation, too loose sounding.MHG

Messages 8,325 Here's my thread on the Fat Jimmy version.......which I believe is pretty much the same speaker, so I think it may be helpful to anyone considering the G12Q as well.Fat Jimmy C1225
It's still in the break-in process, but it already sounds amazing. I'm using an S/S/S Strat and a Fat Jimmy 5E5 and Carr Sportsman. Being a P12Q-style speaker, it's very different from the other Fat Jimmy speakers. I'm loving the aggressive mids that these types of speakers have.
