- What is the difference in the features and applications between the high dielectric type (X5R/X6S/X7R etc.) and the temperature compensating type (COG/U2J etc.)?
There are two types of ceramic capacitors: the high dielectric type and the temperature-compensating type. They have different circuit application uses, so be sure to understand the differences in terms of characteristics before use.

---|---|---|
Material | Calcium zirconate | Barium titanate |
Main temperature characteristics | C0G(Small capacitance change due to temperature) | X5R/X7R(Large capacitance change due to temperature) |
DC bias characteristics | No | Yes |
Aging characteristics | No | Yes |
Capacitance | Low relative dielectric constant and a small capacitance | High relative dielectric constant and a large capacitance can be obtained |
Main circuit application | For oscillation, tuning (filter), coupling, matching, etc. | For bypass circuits, smoothing, decoupling, coupling, etc. |
Example [Temperature characteristics]
Example [DC bias characteristics]
As ceramic capacitors for temperature compensation have no DC bias characteristic, there is no change in capacitance.
- *The design support tool provides features for the display of characteristic data and downloading according to the DC bias voltage/temperature of high-dielectric constant ceramic capacitors.
<Reference FAQ> Does the capacitance change when a DC voltage is applied to ceramic capacitors? Are there any points to be aware of regarding changes in the capacitance? Please tell us whether the capacitance of the ceramic capacitors changes with time. Also, please tell us about any points to pay attention to regarding time-dependent changes.
