This reaction is an example of nucleophilic substitution.Mechanism:1. Protonation: The first step involves the protonation of the ether oxygen atom by the strong acid, HI. The oxygen atom of the ether acts as a nucleophile and attacks the hydrogen ion, forming an oxonium ion.2. Nucleophilic Substitution: In the next step, the nucleophilic oxygen atom attacks the carbon atom of the methyl group in the oxonium ion. This leads to the formation of a new carbon-oxygen bond and the breaking of the carbon-iodine bond.3. Elimination: Finally, the iodide ion is protonated by another molecule of HI, resulting in the formation of methyl iodide, which is a volatile compound, and ethanol.Overall Reaction:CH3-O-C2H5 + HI → CH3-I + C2H5OHReaction with Concentrated HI:The reaction of CH3-O-C2H5 with concentrated HI involves the cleavage of the carbon-oxygen bond, leading to the formation of ethyl iodide and methanol.
