#1 · Mar 27, 2017 (Edited) I have a 2001 540i. Style 42 wheels that are just a little different in the size number. Two of the wheels are 8j x 17 and two of the wheels are 8j x 17H2. I read on the forum that the H2 is a different Bead Hump or Contour style. It's time to change from winter wheels to summer wheels and my question is: Should I keep the same wheels on the same axle in pairs? Or doesn't matter if they get mixed up front/rear when wheel rotation time comes around? Thanks. Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Mar 27, 2017 You aren't going to notice a difference. The width and offset are the most important. #3 · Mar 27, 2017

BMW has already given a "recommendation" for this in the owners manual. Again, this is a "recommendation"...not a requirement...thus it's up to the individual owner if they want to take BMW's advice...or go with their own decision. Obviously, a "square wheel" set-up where all the wheels & tires have the same width, height and offset and are mounted with the same size tires is a different situation vs a staggerd wheel set-up that have different widths & offsets as in regards to tires & wheels: Image #4 · Mar 27, 2017 Wow. If I didn't see that in writing, I would have said it's a little early for April Fool's Day. Obviously with different sized tires, you don't want to mix them up front/back, but only side/side. In my case, all tires are the same size so I expected that rotation would be advised for increased tire wear efforts. My manual is a little different than yours - but not much different. My manual adds the word "interaxle" in the yellow section of your manual. "in the interests of safety and maintaining optimal handling characteristics, interaxle tire rotation is not recommended." I think that until I get different sized tires between front and back, I'll rotate as normal. Well - sort of normal. If BMW recommends every 3000 miles, I can cut my normal 6000 mile rotation down to 3000 miles. Image

#5 · Mar 27, 2017 I'm surprised the wheels are different. Are they both OEM or is one pair after market. I believe H2 means wheel is suitable for run-flats. #6 · Mar 27, 2017 I bought the car used last year. Both sets of wheels/tires came with the car. I have the original window sticker and see that the car originally came with: "Mixed width radial style alloy wheels with 235/45R-17 (front), 255/40R-17 (rear) high performance tires and full-use spare wheel" The 17" wheels I have are type 42. I'd guess they may not be original if they are different with 2 of the H2 version and 2 of them not H2 version. The car didn't originally come with Run-Flats. ( Type 42 wheels is the picture on the left) The 16" wheels I used for winter may not be BMW (I can't find them on any BMW wheel chart) and have 225/55-16" tires on them now. (the picture on the right - not sure what they are)

0 Reply #7 · Mar 27, 2017 What style wheel is the spare? Is there a BMW part number on both the H2 and non-H2 wheels? Should be 1 094 377. Style 42's were the standard 530i sport wheels. I don't think I've ever seen a 540 with style 42's much less staggered 42's. The ETK does show 42's were available staggered though. The 16's you have were a common aftermarket set usually sold with mounted snow tires. I see them on craigslist. #8 · Mar 28, 2017 It looks like the spare is a Style 32 in 17". There's a number on it, but it's hard to read. I think it's 1092961. See picture below. The Style 42's have a part number 1094377 on them. The 'winter wheels' have a Fox 3 Evo ET20 on them.

#9 · Apr 6, 2018 I bought some new tires, going off recommended max sizes here on the forum, but I think I may have made a mistake.... Maybe people recommending 275s had 18" wheels and not 17"? These are going on the Type 42s shown above. I bought some 275/40/17 for the rear and 245/35/17 for the front The shop says that they can't put the 275s on the wheels because they're not wide enough. They said I need 9" wheels and not 8" wheels. Is this true? Do I need to get smaller for the rear? #10 · Apr 6, 2018 8" may not be ideal but it might be acceptable to tire mfr. Find your tire on Tirerack and drill into the mfr's data. It will tell you the range of wheel widths the 275/40-17's are compatible with. #11 · Apr 6, 2018 275s are way too wide. You need at least a 9, preferably 9.5 inch, wide wheel #12 · Apr 6, 2018 I just went with 245s all the way around. Better for rotation and longevity, I suppose. Though I don't think the Firestone Indy 500s will be known for longevity. But I don't put a lot of miles on the car anyway. That sucks that someone sold the original wheels, not that mine look bad - I like the look of the 42s. But the wider rear wheel would have been nice to still have. Hopefully I won't regret the 35 aspect ratio. #13 · Apr 6, 2018 You don't need it, and the 35 sidewall is plenty. #14 · Apr 7, 2018 Do your research, then buy.

Pretty sure this is wrong - lower aspect tires go in the rear with staggered setups. No idea how BMW thinks saying rotation of same size tires is unsafe in any way. Both my cars are staggered so not an issue. #15 · Apr 7, 2018 Firestone doesn't make 275/35/17. I suppose I could have bought different fronts...but it doesn't matter now - I just went with 245/35/17 all around since my wheels aren't wide enough for the 275s. The bad part is that the installer damaged the sidewall on one of the 275s trying to install it. Tire Rack wouldn't take it back for a refund. The installer said he couldn't give me the cost of the tire since he was given the wrong size. But he did give me installation on all 4 for free, which is almost the same price. I came out $40 short. Still not a bad price. But there's even a greater fiasco now - found on THIS LINK #16 · Apr 7, 2018 Why 245/35-17's? They're ~1.6" smaller in diameter than the original 235/45-17's. #17 · Apr 8, 2018 (Edited) My mistake. I re-checked the order history at Tire Rack, and they are 245/45/17. Sorry about that mistake.
