Lately I've noticed what sounds like a rubbing/ sometimes clunking noise at low speeds, and even at a stop with brakes applied. I asked my mechanic to check it out (of course he couldn't hear anything). He thought it might be the tires (Pirelli P6s). He doesn't think its a wheel bearing. Has anyone else experienced this? If you hear rubbing, I'd look for something related to the brakes (ie a bent "backing plate" - that metal shield behind the rotor), worn pads etc. Does the noise change when you apply the brakes while driving at low speeds? other sources of clunks include suspension bushings, axles/CV joints (clicking and thumps when turning around in a driveway would point to the CV joint) and finally engine/transmission mounts. I'd also look at the exhaust system to see if its misaligned or has a torn hanger. I own a 2012 VW CC with 65000 miles and it has some subtle clunks from time to time but the car drives firm and true. I just associate the noises to normal movements in the suspension bushings and CV joints.
