Daily Driver D I am looking into buying a CPO 135i. What model year did the 135i switch from the N54 (twin turbo) to the N55 (single turbo) engine? #1 · Dec 28, 2011 I am looking into buying a CPO 135i. What model year did the 135i switch from the N54 (twin turbo) to the N55 (single turbo) engine? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Dec 29, 2011 The 2011 model year got the N55. #3 · Dec 29, 2011 (Edited) Don't rule out a 135i with the N54 engine. Just make sure it has had the recall work done. A new HPFP You also have a 10 year 120,000 mile HPFP extended warranty that goes with N54 engine BMWs. The N54 engine ( tuned to 335 HP) is good enough that BMW put it in the 1M. #4 · Dec 29, 2011 You'll get mixed opinions. Some people prefer the feel of the N54 over the N55. In general, the N54 is more tunable. Not to mention, it is WAY cooler to say you have a twin-turbo :) #5 · Dec 29, 2011 Having driven both, but own an N55 I can say that both engines have their good and bad points. The N54 is an awesome and tunable engine and even stock is a really easy engine to drive hard. It doesn't have a lot of bad habits but there are times that it feels lacking up high on the tach. Particularly when doing high acceleration passes on the highway I feel like the N54 is a little beyond its peak. It just takes a bit of judicious management of the thrust to get the acceleration you want. The N55 trades its low end for the top end though. It has a notable quarter-heartbeat of lag in the turbo as it spools up which if you don't manage it properly will tend to make you overcompensate with extra throttle and end up either firing off your traction control or turning your rear tires into foul smelling smoke. Although the N54 can do this just as well, it lacks that lag and thus doesn't trick you into compensating. On the flip side though I find that there's a smidge more top-end in there that allows quick highway squirts much easier. The N55 isn't as tunable as the N54 though. Having become accustomed to the N55 I will say that I prefer it, but at first I didn't like it. That momentary lag was confusing and annoying but now that I've adapted to it, I don't even notice it any more. I also find the turbo more audible in the N55 than the N54, which is a sound I actually like. I still miss my old Saab 900 Turbo for the screaming dashes to three-digits, and the 135i with the N55 gives me a bit of that back. Though far more powerful :) Either way, you can't go wrong. I don't even count the HPFP issue with the N54's any more because as far as I can tell the problems have been mostly resolved and BMW made good on taking care of the customer. This good treatment of customers is why I keep coming back to the brand. :) #6 · Dec 29, 2011 Thanks to all for the replies. My current car is a 328i MT. I am only interested in a Manual Transmission (MT). One of the things that pushed me to the 328 (and not the 335) is the turbo lag. Having driven a number of cars, the turbo combined with an automatic is relatively unnoticeable, but I did notice it in the MT. If the turbo lag is greater in the N55, that would be a deciding factor. #7 · Dec 29, 2011 I am going to speak on behalf of the N55. I personally don't think either car has lag. This is the whole reason BMW went with two turbos in the N54 and a twin scroll configuration on the N55. Both configurations reduce lag. By the way, I also have driven a '84 Saab Turbo 900 manual, and the BMW 135i is not your parent's Saab. ;) (I have driven both the N54 and own the N55.) If you want improved throttle response, just drive the car in Sport mode the entire time. And I don't agree that the N54 is more tunable. Both the N54 and N55 can be modded with the JB4 tune at this time. And if you do some reading you will find that with BMW requiring DME software updates when you bring the car in for service, most 1addicts.com drivers have stated that after the mandated DME updates, the N55 has actually improved in performance, which I can attest to, but a loss of 1 mpg unfortunately. Most N54 owners are not happy after the update. And best of all, the 2011+ has none to very few complaints with HPFP, and no airbag dash deformation issues on the passenger side...which are two big pluses in my book. My two cents.
