My friends vw had it on the radio. If not, then the dealer is going to charge you like $90 to get the code. You can find out where the original dealership is, call them up, act like you work for a shop or another dealership and try to scam the code out of them. I'm not reccomending that, just throwing it out there http://****************.com/smile/emthup.gif Modified by b4myS4 at 4:12 PM 11-27-2006 #6 · Nov 28, 2006 Try 1111 Look under the rear trunk carpeting, there is a white sticker. The radio code will be on a silver sticker. #7 · Nov 29, 2006 Re: where is the radio code to get it out of safe mode???? (vwfox6) There should be an additional little book that came with the owner's manual that covers the stereo. They came with a little card (that you could tear out) that had the code printed on it. If you are lucky, you still have that book, and the card is still in there. Otherwise you have to pull the radio out and get the serial number off the radio and have a dealer look up the code for you. Some dealerships will charge you for it, some won't. Just be nice about it. #8 · Dec 11, 2006 Re: (b4myS4)

Last I heard, the charge is $40, and not all dealers charge it -- it costs the dealer nothing to look up the radio code in their computer system. #9 · Dec 11, 2006 Re: (VWestlife) True, it is actually free for them. I installed a headunit from a '97 Jetta in my '84 Rabbit and needed the code. Bought it from eBay, no code, and a fellow vortexer who worked in a dealership helped me out; just needed some number off of the radio IIRC, or the VIN to check whether the car is stolen or not. #10 · Dec 21, 2006 Re: (izzo) Isn't the days of stolen radio's over? Every car has a radio better then those old VW Radios. You can even get an amazing radio these days at Walmart for next to nothing. I am going to look for the sticker. The only problem is, I'm not sure if the radio in the car I just bought (1995 Golf) is the one that came with the car. Image Merry Ho Ho! Image #11 · Dec 23, 2006 Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" Well I called VW and talked to my parts guy. He tiik the VIN and S/N from the radio and gave me a code. My problem now is it looks like my radio had the code entered wrong 3 times already. As far as I know that radio can no longer be used now. That sure seems like a really stupid system! Image I just want to get the cheap stock 12 year old radio working. There has to be a work around for this problem. I find it hard to believe that the only thing to do is throw it out. So if anyone has any ideas... Please post them. Thanks! Modified by BugShow at 2:00 PM 12-23-2006 #12 · Dec 23, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (BugShow) VW's code system gives you three tries to enter the correct code, and if you still get it wrong, the radio will lock up for an hour. In this case, leave the radio on for an hour. Then you can re-enter the code. To enter the code, hold down the MODE and SCAN buttons until "1000" appears on the display, then let go. Use the preset buttons 1, 2, 3, and 4 to enter the first through fourth digits of the code. (The first digit of the code will always be "0" or "1". If the first digit is "0", it is left blank on the radio display, so a code of "0570" will appear as " 570"). When you have the code entered, hold down MODE and SCAN until "SAFE" appears on the display. Let go, and if you entered the correct code, the radio will start to play. If not, "SAFE" will blink and either you will get another chance to enter the code or the radio will lock up for an hour, depending on how many of the three tries you have already used. #13 · Dec 24, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (VWestlife) You can use the MFA diagnostic mode to get the code as well. I am looking for the procedure. #14 · Dec 24, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (westcoastjay)

That'd be interesting.... if you have MFA Image #15 · Dec 24, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (westcoastjay)

I'd like to know about this. I've put the MFA into diagnostic mode and it just tells you your instant MPG and some other cluster information. I don't know that it has the ability to retrive the code from the radio and display it. #16 · Dec 25, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (jjwl89) Q: How can I code the Heidelberg head unit if I don't know the factory set code? A: Dan Martensen wrote: Push in the mfa button on the wiper switch (I'm talking about the G60's so if it doesn't work on the vr6's C'est la vie!). Anyway hold the button in and turn the car on enough to have all the stuff on....NOT THE WHOLE CAR (ENGINE). Leave your finger on the button the whole time and keep it for 10 seconds. Turn the power off ...DON"T TAKE THE KEY OUT. Now turn the car completely on...you will see some different numbers than usual on the mfa screen. There will be in no specific order...Boost guage readings, code for computer chip, code for Heidelberg Head Unit...and some other stuff. The # is 4 digits for the stereo, punch them in....duh. THE MFA THING IS NOT PERMANENT DON'T WORRY you have to do the whole deal over again. #17 · Dec 25, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (westcoastjay) I believe that trick is only for Corrados, and it only work if the car still has its original radio. Unlike today's VWs, there is no direct connection between the car's ECU and the radio -- even if you can get the MFA to display the radio code, it's just showing whatever was programmed into it at the factory... it's not actually reading the code from the radio. #18 · Dec 25, 2006 Re: Stock Radio Mess... "Safe Mode" (westcoastjay) Nice trick.... should've tried it in my '84 Rabbit GTI Image Insert Quotes Post Reply
