Willvrd88 W Hey guys this is my first post on the forum, I bought a mk5 GTI about a month or so ago. I've put in a new cold air intake from Unitronic, as well as a Catless DP. Wondering where I should go from here. I want to tune but also want to make sure everything on my car is ready for the higher boost pressure, power, etc. Been looking at catch cans, new diverter valves, specifically interested in turbosmart vag kompact plumb back. I want to go stage 2, but was wondering if there's any preventative maintenance/mods I can do to make Sure she's running great by the time I get the tune. Thanks! #1 · Mar 6, 2021 Hey guys this is my first post on the forum, I bought a mk5 GTI about a month or so ago. I've put in a new cold air intake from Unitronic, as well as a Catless DP. So you did not get any maintenance history with the GTI. #3 · Mar 6, 2021 So it’s an 06’, FSI Motor, engine swapped before I bought it, about 90 k on the engine now, 136k on the chassis, I bought a cam follower yesterday, received it today. Gonna put that in. Just need some extra advice as I’m new to this car and tuning in general. #4 · Mar 6, 2021 10 year plus GTI MKV owner here. The diverter valve has been revised since 2006, so you may want to replace if it has not been. The older versions with a blue diaphragm fail easily with increased boost, the new ones are a totally different design. The new VW one is all you should need, no need for any fancy tuning ones or spacers. I would replace spark plugs with NGK BKR7EIX when you do a tune. If DSG I would do the DSG service. If manual you should be okay. The factory clutch in the MKV is stronger than the one in the MK6 and MK7 and can handle the extra torque if it is in good shape. I have had no issues being stage 1 for nearly 10 years. #5 · Mar 6, 2021 That cam follower is a pain in the arse, theres a #8 (I believe its #8) 12 point (aka triple square) banjo bolt on one of the lines to the HPFP that needs to come off. My advice to you is remove your air intake and go from underneath the HPFP with a long extension to get that one off. Be careful not to strip it out as its very easy to do if the bit is not seated properly. This bolt is one time use btw. Also once you have the pump removed, its a good idea to turn the engine over so the lobe on the camshaft is pointed away from the cam follower so its easy to assemble everything again. #6 · Mar 7, 2021 Howdy! Old stage 2 FSI owner here. I would recommend a few things here as you're at the exact point I was before I got my tune. You're already tackling the cam follower which is a great first step, but expect the cam follower to wear out faster with increased power from your tune. I would go ahead and order a boost gauge honestly, I used the P3 vent one and loved it, its good to have accurate info on how your car is performing. If you're not on an upgraded clutch, the OEM one wont be able to handle anything after stage 1 for very long (if at all). If you're looking to replace the diverter valve with an OEM one, the revision D DV is capable of handling all the boost a K03 and K04 can throw at it. Aftermarket, I wouldn't recommend anything other than GFB DV+. From this point on its pretty much all up to you. I would do suspension/brakes as well, as both will increase the overall feel and drivability of the car. 1 big thing is make sure the timing belt has been replaced by now, and expect the PCV valve to go early on in your tune. #7 · Mar 7, 2021 Maintenance to do before tuning is really only necessary if doing a custom tuning session. Otherwise a Tuner's Dealer will tune it so long as there are no fault codes when you arrive for tuning. If you just want to make sure it is ready for a tune and performs its best once tuned...then: Timing checked; be sure the chain tensioner is good, cam adjuster rings are good, and the cam adjuster unit isn't grooved by the three rings. Ignition is new; New genuine coils and proper plugs. NGK Plugs; BKR7EIX_PFR7B_or FR7BHX-S 92400. Intake valves have had the carbon removed. A new fuel filter and have the LPFP (in-tank pump) performance checked. Latest revision DV (diverter valve) is pn: 06H 145 710 J A proper PCV installed. There are two designs of PCV and rear vent tubes. One PCV will work with either vent tube. It is pn: 06F-129-101-R #8 · Mar 7, 2021

If you do all that ROH ECHT says, you will have a solid MKV. 0 Reply #9 · Mar 7, 2021 Thanks guys, means a lot. Also wondering am I gonna notice a difference from the tune? I want to go stage 2 but all of the tunes I’ve seen other than apr, have the tune optimized for 93 gas, I only have 92 available in my area. #10 · Mar 7, 2021 And there’s no apr dealer near me. I’m not driving across state to get apr. 0 Reply #11 · Mar 7, 2021 (Edited) Yes...you will notice the difference when it's tuned. You can add every bolt-on you can find and feel hardly no addition of power. When tuned, you will feel a huge difference and wish it had come this way from the factory. I had GIAC tune before switching to their K04 tune. They have 91 and 93...and their dealers generally load the 91oct tune for 92 octane. I also have 92 here in Oregon. You could check GIAC or United Motorsport sites for dealers nearest you...↓Links↓

Not sure how to do that as this is my first car. Show more replies 0 Reply #14 · Mar 8, 2021 Cleaning intake valves can be done in a few ways. Some shops will have a walnut shell, or other type of media, blasting service. You would need to contact all of your local shops if wanting to find one which has a media blaster. Some shops, or owners doing their own, will manually soak and scrape each valve. This requires some crank turning when you need to soak valves which are open...and remove all of the loosened bits. Another way, which I do, is a solution blow-by. But I only recommend doing a blow-by as a preventative interval after the valves have had a manual or blast cleaning. I've done mine each year after they were cleaned at 120k miles. I only put 2.5k to 3k miles on it per year now. Try a search for "MK5 GTI intake valve cleaning." I have a video and if you use it...please read the vid description. Insert Quotes Post Reply
