Skavilla S I have a 2008 535i with Steptronic transmission. How do i determine which transmission model I have? I am trying to find a rebuild kit online, and most specify ZF6HP19 or ZF6HP28 transmission. Anyone know anything? Thanks #1 · Feb 7, 2019 I have a 2008 535i with Steptronic transmission. How do i determine which transmission model I have? I am trying to find a rebuild kit online, and most specify ZF6HP19 or ZF6HP28 transmission. Anyone know anything? Thanks Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Feb 7, 2019 It would be a 6HP26 (most likely) or 6HP28. The popular theory is that some time late in the evolution of the E60, the update to the 6HP28 from the 6HP26 occurred (at least for 535 and 550), but this information is a bit sketchy. It may be possible to interrogate the car using one of the BMW diagnostic tools to determine which version you have. Visually, if you have access, the model number is stamped on the tranny somewhere (can't recall where). #3 · Feb 7, 2019 I've been curious about that myself and have found no reliable info online as of yet. I'll try to get this info for us both today when I get home since my undertrays are off and I can crawl under there, unless someone else posts the info beforehand. #4 · Feb 7, 2019 Sounds good. Thanks for the reply. #5 · Feb 7, 2019 I've been doing a little research on a clunking issue I now have in Park after doing some module updating (upon initial startup only, not when shifting from Park into gear) and came across TSB SI B 24 08 08 and it mentions the 5-Series with N54 engines came equipped with what BMW calls the 6HP19TU, or what ZF calls the 6HP21, both of which are supposed to be a Generation 2 tranny from 2006 onward, which fits our builds. However, Wiki, as it's often wrong, mentions other types, as well as different types of transmissions depending on whether the car is 2-wheel or AWD. I'll still try to visually confirm though, just because I'm always curious about such things. #6 · Feb 7, 2019 I find this site helpful. https://www.automobile-catalog.com/ #7 · Feb 7, 2019 Yeah, that's useless. "ZF 6HP series" -- boy that narrows it down. 0 Reply #8 · Feb 8, 2019 (Edited) Okay, I crawled under the car and came away with the following decal info, but nothing else visible: ZFS LU 7581403 1071 052 044W8C 0086979W8C HW 7576211 The only thing relevant after googling all that crap was the 7576211, which brings up some ebay auction results stating the transmission for sale is a 6HP21. Not exactly a big help there, but at least that maps out to the correct transmission from other sources I've read online. Still though, I've seen nothing official anywhere on which transmission is in these cars. UPDATE: I changed up the search parameters a bit and came away with the following after leaving off the W8C on the 2nd line: 1071 052 044 That gets me to a site with that actual part # listed for the N54 and lists it as a 6HP21X, whatever the hell that is. I should add that the dates on that PDF part # match my 02/2008 build date. https://transmisevilla.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/catalogo_transmicion.pdf Here's another one that maps out 1071 05x as all being 6HP21X also. https://www.autogear.fi/vaihteistokauppa/zf6hp21.pdf Something else I read, but can't find again, is that the X designation at the end of 6HP21X likely indicates it's specifically for the x-drive or AWD model, and since I have a 535xi that would make sense. Honestly, the more I read into this stuff, the less sense it makes. It's very possible that the info on that decal on my transmission relates to nothing more than the transmission case, possibly not to the internals. Who knows at this point. Not much info on the 6HP21X online either. #10 · Feb 8, 2019 You are correct about the X signifying a transmission for the xi model. 6HP21 is also known as 6HP19TU (TU stands for technical update). Same goes for 6HP28 as it's also known as 6HP26TU. In a nutshell, the 6HP19 transmission is a lower torque specification transmission as opposed to the 6HP26 found on the 550i and later models of the 535i. NOTE: If you are boosting your engine to levels beyond this transmission's capacity you may need to consider upgrading the transmission. 0 Reply #9 · Feb 8, 2019 (Edited) This may help you: https://zftranspart.pinnaclecart.com/index.php?p=home

#11 · Feb 8, 2019 rebuild kit In what terms do you mean a rebuild kit? Valve body and Mechatronics? I only ask because I just did both and so far pleased with the results. #12 · Feb 8, 2019 (Edited) Thanks for everyone's help. tttomttt, did you do valve body and mechatronics yourself? It looks like the valve body can be removed with tranny still in car. Is that true? If so, I will replace the solenoids and bridge seal (as well as pan/filter) and see if that fixes my problems. These are my transmission problems: Can seldom get it to go into reverse. Put it in Drive and shifts right back to Park. I can hold the shifter in Drive, rev it a little bit and it pop into drive. I have only driven the car twice since all of this started. First time it drove fine. Next time it drove fine for a little while, then changed to "cripple mode" enough for me to get it home, about 2 miles. You think it may just be the solenoids? Anyway, having watched a couple of videos on Youtube, not sure if I want to try dropping the whole tranny and messing with clutches, etc. Looks a bit out of my league. Valve body I can handle, though, if it can be removed while rest of tranny stays put. thanks again everyone. #13 · Feb 9, 2019 Skavilla, I believe there are some transmissions with a park solenoid so that indeed could be your problem. First and foremost compare your symptoms with what is reported in all the forums. Also confirm your transmission type. The problems I experienced was the very common 2nd gear to 1st gear bump when coming to a stop. In addition the car would go into limp (failsafe) mode when downshifting from 6th to 5th when aggressively driving. This happened 2 or 3 times to me and every time I was able to clear the failsafe by turning off the car and restarting which returned the car to normal operation. The code read through my Foxwell was 4F85/ not present EGS: Ratio monitoring, clutch E. The research on this code came up with a clutch E bushing play, meaning a transmission rebuild. With my car having only 50,000mi I sort of went out on a limb and thought that this code was probably a resultant of the bridge seal or some other fluid flow problem that was triggering the code rather than a bushing problem. I talked to a local transmission guy who came recommended to me by an Indie a few years ago. He took the time to talk this over with me and sort of agreed with my theory. My chosen path was to purchase the Mechatronic kit from FCP although I used Pentosin fluid and a rebuilt valve body from Revmax. This is definitely a doable DIY one which I certainly would have tackled had it not been winter here in NY. I struck a deal with my transmission guy and had him perform the labor. After resetting the adaptions for the transmission I took it on a very aggressive run yesterday and it passed with flying colors. All previously noted symptoms are gone. Whew, I was very relieved. Even though my theory worked here I also had in the back of my head that if I still experienced the 4F85 code it only meant my transmission needed to be rebuilt, however I would reuse the newly acquired valve body and seals in the transmission as part of the rebuild. I hope this helps everybody make an informed decision about the route to take and I felt very lucky I had a good transmission guy to bounce this idea off of and not some money hungry guy who just wanted the job to rebuild it. Best of luck, Tom #14 · Feb 9, 2019 Thanks Tom. I am getting some similar codes as well. Researched it and going to do the valve body rebuild myself. A couple of indy places around here (Atlanta area) wanted about $2000-$2500 to do it. Found a gold mine: https://zftranspart.pinnaclecart.com Authorized ZF dealer. Great guys. You actually talk to them using a device called the "telephone". First they identified what tranny I have from the VIN. Turns out that it is the 6HP21 (1071-030-019). Then we put together what parts I should replace. Solenoid kit Oil Pan kit (4) Valve Body Sleeves Bridge Seal Plug Adaptor (7) Liters ZF Lifeguard 6 Everything shipped to my door for $540. Now here is how to do everything: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2g-5uY_P7uA (This guy is awesome, bunch of good BMW videos) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoIRHWDUSNU Mine is electronic shift, so I think there is one more solenoid and a cable that comes with the kit. A bunch of videos out there about these transmissions. Anyway, I'll give an update when I knock this out next week. #15 · Feb 10, 2019 Skavilla, Nice buddy. Best of luck with the work. I really love this car since I retrofit M5 sport seats into it and especially now that I can drive like it is meant to be driven and not baby it. Insert Quotes Post Reply
