iamdoingthat I Hello again, I just picked up an alternator out of a 1.8 16v (thanks ABS) because the alternator in my 8v is dead. He mentioned that I may need to change the pulley on the outside to fit the 8v belts. Would someone know if this is true, I'll be taking the alternator to my mechanic tomorrow and don't want to tell him the wrong thing (better not to say anything definitive if I'm not sure). Thanks again. #1 · Dec 4, 2002 Hello again, I just picked up an alternator out of a 1.8 16v (thanks ABS) because the alternator in my 8v is dead. (iamdoingthat) unless the 1.8 16v alternator is different than a 2.0 16v, then no. different mounting brackets. [Modified by nickinboston, 12:12 AM 12-4-2002] #3 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (nickinboston) I got mine rebuilt the other day. Everywhere I went was saying I should have the 90amp, but it doesn't fit on the mounting bracket. but the 65 does, and thats what I had on. are 1.8 16v's supposed to have a 65amp, or a 90? #4 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (iamdoingthat) hi- 16V alternator usually comes with 90amp and 8V comes 65 amps.. make sure you pull the 8V pulley and put on 16V alternator. your will be fine Image [Modified by fasty, 10:04 PM 12-3-2002] #5 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (fasty) I AM DO-EENG DAT! Image #6 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (VRpoweredA2) Okay, so nick says no problem, and fasty says to change the pulley. I hadn't even considered getting the pulley from the original 8v alternator (damn I'm stupid), which makes the process pretty simple either way. Eye-am-due-eeng-dat! #7 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (iamdoingthat) my 8v has 90A standard. It is different from a 16v alt as far as mounting goes. #8 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (vwtoys) 8v w/ A/C should've had 90A alternator. Maybe just in the later a2's.. My 87 Golf GT w/o a/c has a 65A. #9 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (optikNurve) 85 8 valve=65 amp alternator #10 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (A2JettaGLI18) 8V and 16V mount differently. Non A/C cars (either) got 65 Amp while A/C cars got 90s. #11 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (iamdoingthat) i was trying to say they mount differently.....i just wasn't too clear. #12 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (nickinboston) The 16v alt. will not work in a stock 8v application. you will have to add the 16v mounting base to use that alt. you will also have to change the pullies. the 90a you are looking for came on 85-92 deisel g/j with a/c #13 · Dec 4, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (iamdoingthat) sorry, I checked at Kragen found that 8V and 16V alternator are different mount. But you can get 90A alternator for 8V cost 98 bux from kragen with exchange core. Maybe someone here know where cheapest cost for the alternator 8V 90A. good luck Image #14 · Dec 5, 2002 Re: Will 1.8 16v alternator work in my 8v? (fasty) Well, heard back from the mechanic, and it didn't fit because of the mounting problems. I got a brand new one for $100, some no-name brand. Thanks for the help y'all. #15 · Mar 17, 2015 I'm about to attempt this swap on my 1984 mk1 Jetta GLI with the 16v mounting bracket and 16v power steering pump. Haven't even checked the fittings on the pump yet, but I imagine it can't be too different. I plan to swap the pullies on the two alternators. Any problems you think I'll run into? #16 · Mar 17, 2015 ^Re: '84 GLI with the 16V mounting bracket. You should be able to use everything (PS, A/C Comp, Alternator) on the front of your engine that a PL 16V had since you have the PL accessory bracket mounted. WPs are in the same loc'n etc. Insert Quotes Post Reply
