Application:

Chemical State Surface analysis

Typical Use:

XPS is a surface analytical technique to identify and quantify the composition of the sample surface. XPS can also identify the chemical state of the elements present. Depth profiling is possible, as well as analysis of insulating materials.

Conditions for Use:

Visitors are invited to work in the lab to work with lab personnel. Visitors are invited to work in the lab to design and do the work yourself. Training session (short course) is offered.

ICAL is a university-operated user facility that supports research and education for the academic community as well as the local private sector.

Sample Preparation:

Samples need to be vacuum compatible. Small samples (the size of a quarter or smaller) are preferred, powders and insulating materials are acceptable. Wet samples are not allowed.

The XPS system uses the RBD windows upgrade for data collection and basic analysis. CASAXPS is also available for more in depth analysis.

Educational Use:

Class demonstrations are available for undergraduates. Class demonstrations are available for K-12. Undergraduate student research projects are invited. Graduate student research projects are invited. Tutorials and other educational materials related to the lab are available.
