Jan 4, 2014 13 0 10,510 Hi there I know this is a odd pairing but still Basically I want the best bang for buck CPU I can afford so I was looking at the fx 8350 8 cores that could be overclocked to 5ghz for £120 pretty good however a dig into eBay found me the Xeon x5650 6cores 12 threads and loads of l3 cache for £77 don't mind if I do But the this threw up another problem and Xeon compatible motherboard is £150 which seems a lot to me where as the fx 8350 motherboard would be about £80 but obviously has alot less features So my questions are Which would preform better? And would the Xeon be worth the extra £30? Or is there another option I've missed? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated Oh yeah I do plan of over clocking and you can overclock the xeon Sort by date Sort by votes JimF_35

Dec 27, 2010 1,725 0 20,460 Most XEONs are made for servers and huge uptimes, but they are poor overclockers because most have the multiplier locked. You can over clock them by using the BLK/FSB but there are limits on this and if you are BLK overclocking then you need really fast RAM because when you over clock the BLK you also overclock the RAM. That being said XEONs do have multiple QPIs which make them good at working in multi processesor environments so if you are looking at setting up a parallel processor system to crush the bench marks then go with 2 XEONs. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/252333-29-overclocking-intel-xeon-x5550 Upvote 0 Downvote T

Oct 12, 2013 2,514 0 13,460 I'd like to post the fact that, overclocking isn't the be all and end all of the PC world like half of this forum think. Instead of getting the FX-8350 why not get a locked i5 such as the 4430/4440? even these will perform better. I'd take the 4430/4440 in this case as they're modern and have good upgrade opportunities. FX-8320 gets a good mention and if you're looking for budget performance the fx-6300/i3 4130 aren't bad either. Upvote 0 Downvote T
