I have a fairly timid cat, does the machine make a lot of noise when it's cleaning? I.e. Is it as loud as a traditional Vacuum Cleaner while in operation? If so, is it quiet enough to run throughout the night and not be disturbed?

They are nowhere near as loud as a corded vacuum cleaner- they simply don't have the size and power to be comparable. These things are more like brushing machines than true vacuum cleaners. It might still freak out your cat though.

I have one, picked it up for same price $1700 when they had an 8 year anniversary sale a few months back. Bear in mind that this is the version 1 vacuum cleaner, and there is a version 2 "roborock" that also mops the floor (you fill it with water) and it goes over bumps better if there are bumps separating your kitchen, bathroom, etc. But the V2 is a lot more expensive (around $4k), so I'd still go with the V1 and it's great. I like the software, integrates into the MI home app, it draws a map of your house and you can watch it cleaning different rooms on your phone. You can also link it up to google home and say "Hey google, vacuum the floor" and it starts cleaning. Regarding noise, it has quiet, balanced, turbo, max modes. I usually leave it on balanced and it's a fair bit quieter than a traditional vacuum on these settings. Mine lives under the couch (there is enough clearance for it to go under). Also I schedule it to run at 1pm every day when nobody is home. So I hardly ever see it except once a week or so I get a notification that the dust bin is full. Then I open the app, go into the manual 'remote control' mode to drive it out from under the couch, empty the dust bin, and then order it back to the dock. Occasionally it gets lost if it gets stuck on a cable or something and I come home from work it has not found the dock and is just in the middle of the floor somewhere asleep. There is a button on the app to find it and then it shouts "Hey Im over here" from the speaker. But this is quite rare. Most days it cleans everywhere and then returns back to the dock fine for a recharge. It also has different voice packs, but only one english and one cantonese voice. The others are Mandarin but there are voices for "Anime character", "cute school girl", "Announcer", "Robot", etc. My apartment 1178sqf gross, around 900 net. It does in about 45 minutes but doesnt do the two bathrooms and kitchen because it can't get over the bumps. The battery is still 80% remaining after doing the whole house. But if it runs out in the middle of cleaning, it goes back to dock, recharges, and then starts again. I don't think many people in HK will have this problem. I just need to build a little ramp for it or buy the $4k roborock that mops the floor as well if I want it to do my kitchen and bathrooms.

@bdw how does this thing navigate? Does it just wander around completely at random (the Roomba I used did this) or does it map out and follow some better considered path? The mention of a map suggest the latter. The random Roomba walk was very poorly suited to the typical HK flat design where rooms are connected by a long and narrow corridor- it would mainly do the starting room, and if it made it into the corridor it would just get lost and run out of power rather than find its way back.

Below is a map of my place that it generated automatically. It has these different sensors. Basically it divides the home into sections, goes around the edges of each section, then does all the middle bits, then off to the next section. You can the map where it goes all around in circles around these obstacles, that's my dining table and 4 chairs . Also there are 3 rooms that appear to be not done because it can't get over the bump in the floor, that's my kitchen and 2 bathrooms. It still has some sensor on the top that has 'peeked' into these rooms but not enough to fully map them out properly. Finally at the bottom left is another what looks like a room but actually is a corner mirror there so the mirror has tricked the vacuum into thinking something else is there but is not. impressive. i bought two ifast ones. they are decent. move around the house randomly, but because the battery is powerful enough to run for 1.5 hours, generally they cover everywhere after 1.5 hours if not stuck somewhere. i think hairs/dust are the target to be picked up.. anything more i am not sure if they can handle.

@bdw That is much more impressive than the randomised versions. I'll most likely get one- I just have to dig up a spare Android phone at home.

Thank you very much, it's difficult to get qualitative reviews of new tech like this but this is extremely helpful - thank you. It's a thoroughly helpful stepping stone on the way to realising my vision of converting my home into a SMART fortress!
