Skip to main contentLast weekend I had to translate a video transcription from English into Spanish for a famous American-Chinese restaurant chain. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to see the video first. The video included some words in Chinese which -to my point of view- should neither be translated into English nor into Spanish, as those words were the core of the message of this short video.
The main character, Mr. Lee, invited an American boy from his neighborhood to join him and his family for dinner. Apart from sharing with the boy the traditional Chinese food, they tried to teach him how to say "Happy New Year" in Chinese, their mother tongue. It was clear that these 4 simple words had to remain in the original language. Translating these 4 words would be a mistake; something the person who extracted the text from the video did not understand or even consider.
That's why I decided to let the customer know my opinion about this, and we together decided to leave the Chinese words in the original language.
Both the customer and I felt really satisfied with the work. On several occasions, we -as translators- have to do more than what's expected from us: not only translating but also understanding the context and making suggestions regarding the content.
