Synopsis

Having problems with his meridians and thus rendered incapable of practicing the internal arts, Qin Yu lives in seclusion with Grandfather Lian. To cheer up a depressed Qin Yu, Lian gifts him a peculiar bird, which the former names Xiao Hei. Wanting to be recognized by his father, Qin Yu embarks on the path of cultivation. With Zhao Yunxing's rigorous training method, he strives to overcome his physiological hindrance and become an expert in the external arts. While resting from one such training session, Qin Yu discovers a red crystal that, to his surprise, fuses with his body. Unbeknownst to him, this subtle transformation gives Qin Yu astounding abilities that will aid him as he sets out, with Xiao Hei in tow, to prove that he is worthy of his father's acknowledgement. Write review 4 Recommended 1 Mixed Feelings 1 Not Recommended All reviews (6) Mar 21, 2020 MrHaibo Recommended I was planning to write a review on this anime anyways, but after reading the only other review, I now have to write one.... (the other review was really bad... if you couldn't tell already) This review is spoiler free so feel free to read it before you watch. Xing Chen Bian is a Chinese anime I found while going though the romance genre on MAL. I decided to give it a go since it had a decent rating. With that being said, there are zero romance in this anime, ZERO. so if romance is the only thing you care about, move along cuz you ain't finding ... it here. Let's start with the story, it's pretty basic. We all have seen an anime where the main character is told that he is hopeless and can't do great things, and somehow he becomes OP. Well, this is one of those. The main character Qin, Yu was born without the special gift to hold power within himself, so he was deemed useless. Although his father never gave up on him and loved him very much, he didn't have high hopes for him. The story begins with a flash back (or I guess flash foreword) of a bit of the last episode, and then cuts back to Yu's childhood. The plot itself wasn't bad but it lacks creativity in the bigger picture (6/10) The music used in this anime was great as with almost all Chinese anime, they add on to the mood and gives the scenes which have music more character. The background soundtrack as well as the sound affects are also very well done, nothing felt out of place. (9/10) This anime uses CGI combined with real human motion capture, so while the animation is presented in 3D, everything is very smooth and sometimes felt real. It is not perfect however as some scenes still feels edited. Overall the art was nice to look at so (9/10) Now on to some of my small nit-picks. The pacing felt off on the earlier half of the anime, some things I felt could have been cut shorter and vice versa, however I understand that could just be personal reference. The dialog sometime have unnecessary pauses and charters just kinda of stood there doing nothing. There was many times were it felt more like cut-scenes from a RPG rather than an anime. But hey, these are just some of the things I found odd. Last but not least, the translation. I was born in China and lived there for 12 years before I moved to Canada, so my first language is Chinese. Chinese as a language in nature is more complicated than English, so any Chinese anime you watch will be better if you understood Chinese. As this anime takes place in a fantasy version of China a few hundred years ago, the language used is sometimes complicated and when translated, lose some of its meaning. So just keep that in mind if the translation doesn't make sense sometimes. Overall, this was a fairly enjoyable anime to watch. It is definitely not a masterpiece or something close to it, but if you just want something to watch and pass the time, this anime is not a bad choice. Overall a 7.2 out of 10 in my books. Yeah, this is the opposite. The story seems decent enough even though I've never read the web novel, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for the animation quality and dialogue. In case you missed the last sentence, the animation is bad. Not quality kinda bad, but lazy kinda bad. There was a close-up scene of about 10 warriors who look exactly the same. I mean, seriously? You can't even be bothered using the myriad of skins you have or at least tweak them a little? The facial expressions in some ... parts are so poor to the point that you have to rely on the conversation to guess the characters' emotions. The fight scenes are by far the WORST thing about this dongman. Even Goku building his spirit bomb for 3 episodes looks more interesting than a short fight in this dongman. Apart from the training scenes, none of the fights were choreographed. Take a look at the fight scenes from Tunshi Xingkong(Swallowed Stars, written by the same author) or Wu Geng Ji(The Legend and The Hero) if you want some comparison. The quality of the animation is about the same, but the fight scenes in those two make this look like dog poo. I swear, at least 20% of scenes are just the MC screaming "notice me senpai!" The dialogue about him wanting his father's love is so, so cringe. Ergh! Having said all that, will I watch season 2? I just might, with the story being the saving grace. If the next 12 episodes are still bad, I'll probably ditch this and check out the web novel instead. Reviewer’s Rating: 4 What did you think of this review? Because of his naive reticence to kill, a lot of people get massacred, and someone close to him gets crippled, just so that his little empty head can connect the dots and then 10 years time skip and dude's going around working as an assassin. F... unbelievable, I bet that the writer's mouth still reeks of his mother's breast-milk. Also, the MC has such a dumbass face, and the way he moves his body and mouth when he speaks is like watching Jim Carrey playing dumb and dumber in ... cultivation edition. I pushed myself through one season out of sheer masochistic willpower. I had planned to give it one more season of benefit of the doubt because of the good animation, but it's soooo bad that I have no masochism left to keep going. I give it a few stars just because it doesn't repeat the same formulaic structure of most power-fantasy cultivation (how dare you / power up / how dare you / power up, and so on, forever). And because of the art. The animation if hit or miss. They used the method of tracking real actors's movements (you can see it at the end of the last episode, where you will also realise why the characters move like if they were series-c actors. It's because they ARE series-c actors!). Other than that, it's so BORING that 5 min after finishing watching I already forgot half of the story. I can't recommend this to anybody whose maximum aspiration in life is not watching 240 min of lonely rich child playing with some pet bird while curing his xyz whatever chi blockade, and then training so that he can make his daddy proud again. Or if you don't care about the plot as long as the animation is good... Personally, I think it's the most boring first season (or let's say 12x 20 min, as seasons in donghua are wildly different) out of all cultivation donghua I've ever seen, and one of the most boring out of all the multi-seasons animation, any genre, any Country.
