Synopsis

Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière is a self-absorbed mage in a world of wands, cloaks, and royalty. Although she studies at Tristain Academy, a prestigious school for magicians, she has a major problem: Louise is unable to cast magic properly, earning her the nickname of "Louise the Zero" from her classmates. When the first year students are required to perform a summoning ritual, Louise's summoning results in a catastrophic explosion! Everyone deems this to be yet another failure, but when the smoke clears, a boy named Saito Hiraga appears. Now Louise's familiar, Saito is treated as a slave, forced to clean her clothes and eat off the ground. But when an unfamiliar brand is found etched on Saito's hand from the summoning ritual, it is believed to be the mark of a powerful familiar named Gandalfr. Wild, adventurous, and explosive, Zero no Tsukaima follows Saito as he comes to terms with his new life and as Louise proves that there is more to her than her nickname suggests. Write review 84 Recommended 33 Mixed Feelings 26 Not Recommended All reviews (143) Apr 15, 2025 Destron Recommended When I first watched this show, it was around 2017. However, I dropped it after 4 episodes for reasons I don't know. Most likely because I didn't mind it, but it wasn't something I wanted to continue. I recently decided to go through my dropped anime section and I thought I'd give it another go as I don't remember anything bad about what I watched and I'm so glad I did. I regret dropping this show and after giving it another go has given me much more of an appreciation for it. The animation for the time is actually really nice, the characters are pretty ... good, the stories it told was entertaining. All of it put together made me change it from a dropped anime 5/10 to a completed 10/10 - Currently I'm in the middle of watching season 2 as of writing this review and it's the same thing, loving every minute of it. I also find it really funny when they find some really rare treasure and it turns out it's not a legendary item, it's actually just something from Japan where Saito is found. The staff of destruction for example being a rocket launcher. It put a really entertaining twist on things especially with the Japanese plane they found. Let's talk Louise: I didn't hate her at the start, but I also didn't care too much for her. This is actually pretty common for me as I'm really not into Tsundere characters in anime as I find the vast majority of them to be annoying. Up until Familiar of Zero, the only one I could stand was Asaka Taiga from Toradora. Louise has really grown on me as the episodes have gone on and she's one of the few Tsunderes I actually quite like now. Overall I've really been enjoying this series and I'm really glad I picked it back up. When I started it, I actually had no idea there was 4 seasons. I thought it only had 1. I only found out because of MAL. 10/10 Reviewer’s Rating: 10 What did you think of this review? Just for that alone, there’s value in watching it. That said — is Zero no Tsukaima a good anime? The short answer is: no. The long answer… The anime does have its appeal, and its success isn’t entirely undeserved. It’s simple, easy to understand, with characters built around the “one character, one joke” style. The plots are light but have a minimal amount of substance. The overall production is mediocre — nothing really stands out — but the music is good and the character design is ... distinctive. The anime’s biggest problem is its lack of commitment to anything. Everything is shallow: it feels like a slapstick comedy or even a parody, yet at the same time it tries to introduce drama and mysteries that simply don’t work. It’s impossible to take them seriously because the world and the characters were never properly established. The main problem with Zero no Tsukaima is that it tries to be both a light and funny romantic comedy and a more serious medieval fantasy with mysteries and drama. Nothing more needs to be said except don't watch it. I've watched ex-arm, mars of destruction, and tesla note and this one takes the cake. I have a pretty high tolerance for garbage anime but this one makes me want to throw up. Main female character is probably the worst human being you'll ever find in anime and I watched redo of healer. The art is mid, the characters were ALL obnoxious and stupid. Generic, predictable, trash story writing. Frog main character gets carried by a bunch of OP girls ... that somehow join his harem. I don't think anyone would enjoy this series.
