Game of Thrones is a massively popular fantasy series with a large cast, including well-known actors such as Charles Dance and newcomers who made their names on the show. While Game of Thrones is known for being one of the most riveting fantasy series of the 2010s, many audiences were quick to note the number of actors who tower over their fellow cast members.

From actors just grazing the six-foot mark to characters that stand closer to seven, the showrunners of Game of Thrones have been incredibly faithful to George R. R. Martin's descriptions of his characters. Fans were pleased with the casting of many characters, especially with the likes of Brienne of Tarth and the Mountain. At the same time, not every tall character could be represented accurately, especially those like White Walkers and Giants.

Updated on July 11th, 2024, by Fawzia Khan: The interest in Game of Thrones remains high with the airing of House of The Dragon Season 2 on HBO. Fans love to trace connections between the characters of the two shows, even though there is a difference of nearly 200 years between them. GoT characters were interesting not just because of their complex personalities, but also because of how impressive their physicality could be. This list has been updated with even more of the tallest actors from the cast of Game of Thrones, and how they measure up to their characters.

Season 1, Episode 1 "Winter Is Coming"

Little Bran Stark became the victim of Jaime Lannister and Cersei Lannister's machinations early in the show. An innocent climb up the tower led to the biggest twist in his life, as Jaime threw the little Stark off and disabled him for life. Bran couldn't walk from a very young age, so his height isn't something that is given much importance in Game of Thrones.

Isaac Hempstead Wright was only 12 years old when he was cast in Season 1 of GoT, and quite tiny at the time. He grew up with the show, and currently stands at 5'11''. However, fans couldn't really see the actor's height since he was seated for the entire show — even when he (rather infamously) became King of the Seven Kingdoms.

14 King Robert Baratheon Was An Imposing Character From The Beginning

Season 1, Episode 1 "Winter Is Coming"

When Game of Thrones opened, Robert Baratheon was the seventeenth ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and the first king of the Baratheon dynasty who sat the Iron Throne. He had won the Iron Throne from Rhaegar Targaryen when he allegedly kidnapped Lyanna Stark, who was meant to wed Robert.

Baratheon was known to be a formidable military commander and fighter, which was evident from his Targaryen victory, but he also enjoyed drinking and partying. In the books, he was a whopping 6'5'' feet tall. In the show, however, Mark Addy was at a lower stature of 5'11½", but his nuanced acting and portrayal of Baratheon still made the character larger-than-life.

10 Weirdest Game of Thrones Details Every Fan Missed

Some of the finer details of the Game of Thrones lore are just so bizarre that they slipped the mind of every viewer somewhere along the way.

Ser Bronn of Blackwater began his character arc in Game of Thrones as a sellsword, but his fortunes were about to change soon enough. He gained favor when he fought on behalf of Tyrion Lannister at the Eyrie and joined his court for some time. His cunning got him far, and he rose from bodyguard to Commander of the City Watch and knighthood.

Bronn was not too tall in the books, standing at 5’9''. The actor who played him, Jerome Flynn, is much taller at 6'0", thus turning the sellsword-turned-knight into a physically imposing figure. He also assisted the Lannisters in the Last War but managed to gain position and status under Bran's rule as the new Lord of Highgarden, Lord Paramount of the Reach, and Master of Coin.

12 Tormund Giantsbane Was A Renowned Free Folk Warrior

Seeing Tormund's name, many might mistake him for being a giant himself, but that was not the case. He had reportedly slain a giant, which earned him the nickname. He was also known as Tormund Thunderfist, and despite his tall tales and inappropriate jokes, Tormund had a reputation for his fighting abilities.

At one point, Tormund had fancied himself King-Beyond-the-Wall but had been defeated by Mance Rayder, whom he respected. He became a valuable ally to Jon Snow later on when they fought the White Walkers and the Night King. The height of his character is not mentioned clearly, but the actor himself, Kristofer Hivju, is quite imposing at 6'0".

Jorah Mormont had been exiled and living in Essos before he started spying on Viserys Targaryen and his attempts to retake the Iron Throne for Varys. He had been promised a royal pardon for his services, but Mormont abandoned this when he started serving Daenerys Targaryen. He eased her into the life of a Khaleesi, and when he saw how charismatic and strong Dany was, he stopped spying on her.

Jorah's loyalty remained unmoved throughout the show — even when he contracted Greyscale. He was an old but rugged fighter with years and years of experience. Mormont was canonically 6 feet tall, and the actor playing him was actually an inch taller. He died protecting Daenerys in The Battle of Winterfell.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight will be the next spinoff series based on George RR Martin's Game of Thrones universe, coming in 2025.

Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays one of the Lannister twins, Jaime Lannister. Coster-Waldau stands at 6'2" (188cm), which is taller than many fans thought him to be. George R. R. Martin speculated that Jaime is between 6' and 6'2". In the books, Jaime's height is never specified, and he is instead described as a seemingly arrogant man.

That said, losing his sword hand forced Jamie to shed his ego, thereby evolving into a much more tolerable individual. At the same time, fans learned that he was a great and skilled warrior who inspired loyalty in his followers. Like the other members of his family, his discerning characteristic was his blonde hair as opposed to his height. Interestingly, Jaime's father Tywin is taller than him, demonstrating that House Lannister has the height genes — to a point.

Season 1, Episode 7 "You Win or You Die"

Tywin Lannister, the patriarch of House Lannister and father to Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion was an imposing presence in his own right. Charles Dance, like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, is well cast as Tywin, as he portrays the character's personality incredibly well. In the books, Tywin is frequently described as tall and imposing, which only magnifies his already formidable personality.

At 6'3" (191cm), Tywin's tall stature lends to his dominating presence, particularly when posed in a scene alongside his grandchildren, Tommen, Joffrey, and Myrcella. George R. R. Martin has previously said that King Edward I of England, who was a similar height, served as inspiration for Tywin, from the loss of his wife to the way he approached royal matters. That said, Edward I died in the arms of his servants and not while using a toilet.

8 Brienne Of Tarth Is Easily The Tallest Woman In Game Of Thrones

6'3"

Season 2, Episode 3 "What Is Dead May Never Die"

In the novels, Brienne is described as being as tall as Robert Baratheon and significantly heavier than Jaime Lannister. Considering Robert Baratheon was (in the books) noted as being around 6'6" (198cm), fans were somewhat disappointed that Gwendoline Christie stands at only 6'3", the same as Charles Dance.

Christie had no problem seeming taller to play Brienne, however, and the showrunners must be given credit for using optical illusions to make her seem taller than she is. While there are a few scenes with Jaime where the two seem the same height, the crew did a great job at making Brienne seem as tall as the Hound. Unfortunately, Brienne suffered greatly throughout her life, partly because her height and stature made her come off as stereotypically unwomanly.

25 Best Game of Thrones Scenes That Still Hold Up On a Rewatch

While the hit HBO series may not have ended strongly, these unforgettable Game of Thrones scenes are still strong enough to keep fans coming back.

Jason Momoa was a fan favorite, from his first appearance in "Winter Is Coming" to his death at the end of Season 1 in "Fire And Blood," though he did make a brief appearance in Season 2's "Valar Morghulis." Standing at 6'4" (193cm), Jason Momoa is certainly one of the more imposing actors in Game of Thrones, particularly because he is muscular.

Considering Momoa's character's position as Khal and the clan nature of the Dothraki, this is no surprise. In the novels, Daenerys observed that Khal Drogo stood around a head taller than every other man in the room, suggesting he may have been even taller than Momoa. Drogo was infamous for his combat skills, allegedly capable of defeating multiple enemies simultaneously. His height and size must have come in handy during battle, even if his horse may not have found it very enjoyable.

Season 3, Episode 3 "Walk of Punishment"

In Game of Thrones, Brynden Tully's height is never specifically mentioned, though he is described as tall and lean with a hoarse voice. He is the uncle to Catelyn Stark, Edmure Tully, and Lysa Arryn, and is most often referred to as "the Blackfish." Not only is Brynden an accomplished warrior and longstanding knight, having served Houses Tully and Arryn, but he is also physically imposing.

Actor Clive Russell stands at 6'5" (196cm). His posture is powerful and graceful, reflecting the honorable nature of his character. Brynden Tully managed to fight off the siege of Riverrun, proving that he was extremely capable in battle. Interestingly, none of the other Tully men have been described as tall, including Edmure. In addition, Brynden's nephew Robb wasn't very tall either, standing at around 5'8".
