How Big Is a 10 Cubic Yard Dumpster and What Does It Hold?

The "10 yards" in a 10 yard roll off dumpster refers to its volume: 10 cubic yards of material. This is the equivalent of three pickup truck loads, or 50 to 70 large trash bags. While the volume is standard (10 cubic yards), the external size may vary. A standard 10 yard dumpster is typically 14 feet long, 7.5 feet wide and 3.5 feet high. This makes it about the size of a mid-sized car.

Our dumpster dimensions are external dimensions only, and they can differ by hauler or dumpster manufacturer. The internal volume of a 10 yard dumpster will always be 10 cubic yards.

FAQs About 10 Yard Weight Limits & Permits

How much does a 10 yard dumpster hold?

A 10 yard dumpster holds 10 cubic yards of debris, which is the volume equivalent of about three full pickup truck loads or 50 to 70 large trash bags. This capacity is perfect for smaller cleanouts and projects with a mix of debris.

10 cubic yards of debris looks like:

  • 48 to 72 bundles of roofing shingles
  • 50 to 70 sheets of drywall (4x8 feet)
  • 2,500 to 3,500 square feet of carpeting

Will my 10 yard dumpster have a weight limit?

Yes, all our roll off dumpsters have a weight limit included in your rate. A 10 yard bin has an average weight limit of 2 to 3 tons, or 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. For reference, our small dumpster rental can hold about:

  • 48 to 72 bundles of roofing shingles
  • 50 to 70 4x8 sheets of drywall
  • 2,500 to 3,500 square feet of carpeting

Keep in mind the weight of your debris adds up quickly. The maximum weight a 10 yard container can safely hold is 10 tons.

Calculate the Weight of Your Debris

What if I go over the weight limit?

If you go over your dumpster’s weight limit, you’ll receive a per-ton overage fee. We measure the extra weight and charge you a pro-rated, per-ton fee so you only pay for the amount of debris you toss.

Where can I put a 10 yard dumpster rental?

Keep your roll-off container on a flat, paved surface close to your workspace, such as your driveway, jobsite, or the street. Your designated drop-off spot must be:

  • At least 60 feet long
  • 23 to 25 feet of unobstructed vertical clearance (no hanging branches or low power lines)
  • Clear of obstacles like parked cars and equipment
  • Easily accessible. Please unlock any gates or provide entry codes to our driver

Do I need a permit for a 10 yard dumpster?

Most 10 yard dumpsters can fit in a standard driveway or jobsite. If you keep your bin on private property, you typically don’t need a permit. But if you plan to keep your 10 yard dumpster in the street, you may need a permit from your local municipality ahead of time. Dumpster permits typically cost between $20 and $150, but prices can be even higher in major cities. There may only be a one-time fee, and occasionally there is no charge for a dumpster permit.

How big is 10 yards?

Ten yards, when measuring length, equals 30 feet. However, a 10 cubic yard dumpster is sized by volume, not length — so it does not measure 10 yards long. Instead, a 10 cubic yard dumpster is much smaller and usually fits comfortably in most driveways.

How big is a 10 cubic yard dumpster?

A 10 cubic yard dumpster has external dimensions that usually measure 14 feet long x 7.5 feet wide x 3.5 feet high. Exact dimensions can vary — your 10 cubic yard dumpster could be shorter and taller, or slightly thinner and longer, but it will always hold 10 cubic yards of debris. This size can handle the debris from small renovation or cleaning projects, like clearing out a garage or remodeling a half bathroom.

Easy experience with the Dumpster King

Easy experience. They do not BS; they got right to the point. No time to waste. I requested a quote; they gave it to me via phone; I requested drop off date; they said the next day. Impressed. I ordered a 10yard (4ftx15ft) container for shed teardown trash. I stacked it nicely like a puzzle and flat for safe delivery. When I was done with the disposal, i called them. They picked it up the next day. Easy peezy. No headache for anyone. I will use there service again down the road. Tip: when disposing trash into container, do not simply toss the trash in there, where unsafe pieces stick out. You lose space by not utilizing all of it.

10 Yard Dumpster Rental FAQs

What can I toss in a 10 yard roll off dumpster?

You can toss household junk, yard waste or construction debris in a 10 yard bin. In some locations, you can also throw away mattresses, box springs, electronics and appliances, but these items may have an additional disposal fee.

What can’t I throw away in a 10 yard bin?

You can’t throw flammable or hazardous waste in a dumpster. Other prohibited items include adhesives, food waste, household cleaners and more. These restricted items must be handled separately from other debris.

What types of projects are best for a 10 yard dumpster?

Our 10 yard dumpster is best for projects like:

  • Bathroom demolitions
  • Flooring removal
  • Attic cleanouts
  • Garage cleanouts
  • Seasonal home cleanouts
  • Downsizing or moving
  • Small home renovations
  • Roofing projects

How long is the dumpster rental period?

The typical length of our dumpster rental period is seven to 10 days, but this may vary depending on your area. You can request a pickup at any time during this period. If you need to keep your bin longer, we may be able to extend your rental period for a flat daily rate. Our all-inclusive rates include the cost of your dumpster, delivery, pickup and a flexible rental period.

Can I rent more than one container at a time?

Yes, you can rent as many dumpsters as needed for your project. Order multiple bins for delivery to the same location or different jobsites. Need a second dumpster but don’t have the space? Use our empty-and-return service. We regularly partner with contractors and businesses that need several dumpsters for their cleanup. Our team is here to support you with all your jobsite essentials across multiple locations.

What's the smallest roll off dumpster size I can rent?

The smallest roll off dumpster you can rent is a 10 yard dumpster rental. If you need a smaller, permanent container for your business, check out our commercial dumpster sizes. Available front load sizes include 2, 4, 6 and 8 yard containers.

How much does a 10 yard dumpster cost per week?

The weekly cost of your dumpster rental depends on several factors, but when you rent with us, you’ll receive an all-inclusive price that includes a flexible rental period. The bulk of your rental price comes from the size you rent and the weight of the materials you’re tossing, not how long you keep the dumpster.

Is a 10 yard dumpster cheaper than other sizes?

Not necessarily. Though a 10 yard dumpster is the smallest roll off dumpster size, your final price is determined by the type and weight of your debris. For example, if you throw 3 tons of roofing shingles in a 10 yard dumpster, that dumpster may cost more than a 12 yard dumpster that contains only 2 tons of yard waste. If you're worried about finding the best price for your project, our team of experts is here to talk you through the best options for your budget.

Will a couch fit in a 10 yard dumpster?

Yes, a standard three-seat couch measuring seven feet wide, 3.33 feet deep, and about 2.75 feet tall can fit in a 10 yard dumpster if laid flat.

Is a 10 yard dumpster big enough for my project?

If your project involves cleaning one or two rooms, small remodels or roofing jobs, a 10 yard dumpster is usually a suitable choice.

Can I throw away electronics in a 10 yard dumpster?

No, you generally can’t throw electronics in a dumpster because they may contain hazardous materials. Most electronics are considered e-waste and must be disposed of at an electronics recycling facility. Learn how to dispose of your electronics with our e-waste disposal guide.

What are 10 cubic yards in feet?

Ten cubic yards equals 270 cubic feet. It refers to the amount of material the dumpster can hold, not its exact physical dimensions.
