Timing is the process of synchronizing the camshafts with the crankshaft. This allows the air to enter and exit the engine at a precise time. This also tells the ECU when it should fire each spark plug for optimal combustion.

Modern vehicles may use either timing chains or timing belts, depending on the engine design. While timing belts generally need to be replaced every 60,000-100,000 miles, timing chains are designed to last much longer (often the life of the vehicle).

However, timing chains can still wear out or fail, especially if maintenance is neglected, and may need servicing or replacement if issues arise.

How a Timing Chain Works

Timing chains work a bit like bicycle chains. If you’ve ever ridden a bicycle, you know that the chain connects the pedals to the rear wheel. As you push, the torque from the pedals is transferred to the rear wheel using the chain.

On a four stroke engine with a timing chain, the crankshaft’s rotation is transferred through the chain to the camshaft(s). The timing chain’s job is to keep the crankshaft and camshaft(s) precisely synchronized so the engine’s valve timing stays accurate.

This synchronization allows the valves to open and close at precisely the right time relative to piston movement, allowing the engine to draw in air-fuel mixture and expel exhaust gases efficiently.

Bad Timing Chain Symptoms

1) Chain Noise on Startup

When you go to start your car, you typically shouldn’t hear the timing chain. If you hear an unusual rattling or grinding noise from the engine on startup that goes away after a moment, you may have a failing timing chain component. This noise usually comes from the front of the engine and sounds like marbles shaking in a can or a loose chain slapping against metal.

Note that some vehicles have more engine noise than others, so you’ll want to listen for any new sounds that come up. If you’ve had the car for years and it’s always made a slight timing chain rattle, it might be fine. It never hurts to get the vehicle checked out if you aren’t sure, though.

2) Misfires or Rough Idle

Timing chains don’t directly optimize combustion, but they do keep the camshaft(s) and crankshaft in sync so valve timing stays correct. If a timing chain stretches or jumps a tooth, valves may open or close at the wrong time.This causes a rough running engine, particularly at idle.

You might feel the engine shaking or vibrating more than usual while sitting at a stoplight. The RPMs may bounce up and down irregularly, and you might notice a lack of smoothness in how the engine runs. These misfires can damage your catalytic converter if left unaddressed.

3) Check Engine Light

A failing timing chain often triggers the check engine light before you notice any other symptoms. Modern vehicles have camshaft and crankshaft position sensors that monitor timing accuracy. When these sensors detect that the camshafts and crankshaft are out of sync, they’ll store diagnostic trouble codes like P0016, P0017, P0018, or P0019.

If you see the check engine light, use a scan tool to read the stored code(s) or have them read (usually for free) at a local auto parts store. These timing-related codes indicate that your timing chain has likely stretched or jumped time.

Catching this early can prevent more serious engine damage down the road. Don’t ignore the check engine light, especially if it’s accompanied by any performance issues.

4) Hard to Start Engine

If your timing chain has stretched significantly or jumped multiple teeth, you may have difficulty starting your engine. The engine might crank longer than normal before it fires up, or it may require multiple attempts to start. In the worst case, if the timing chain has broken completely, the engine will crank but not start.

Without a functioning timing chain, the camshaft(s) won’t rotate to open and close the valves. That means no fresh air-fuel mixture can enter and no exhaust gases can exit, leaving the engine unable to run. This is a serious problem that requires immediate attention.

A stretched or loose timing chain affects engine performance across the board. You might notice sluggish acceleration, reduced power when climbing hills, or difficulty maintaining highway speeds. The engine may feel like it’s working harder than it should for normal driving conditions.

This happens because the valves aren’t opening and closing at the optimal time for combustion. Your engine is essentially running out of time, which reduces power output and efficiency.

Along with that, you will likely also experience decreased fuel economy as the engine computer tries to compensate for the timing issues by adjusting fuel delivery. These performance problems typically worsen gradually as the timing chain continues to get worse.

6) Metal Shavings In Oil

When a timing chain begins to fail, it can produce metal debris that circulates through your engine oil. If you check your oil and notice it has a gritty texture or you see metallic particles on the dipstick, this could indicate timing chain wear. You might also notice this during an oil change if the old oil appears to have metal flakes in it.

The metal shavings come from the timing chain wearing against guides or tensioners, or from the chain pins and links grinding together. This is a serious warning sign that the timing chain assembly is deteriorating. If caught early, you may be able to prevent complete failure and keep the internal damage to a minimum.

What Causes a Timing Chain to Break?

Neglected Oil Changes

The most common cause of timing chain failure is neglected oil changes. Old, dirty oil can clog or restrict the oil passages that feed the hydraulic timing chain tensioner. When the tensioner can’t maintain proper oil pressure, slack develops in the chain. This leads to increased wear, rattling noises, and eventually may cause the chain to snap.

Low Oil Level

Even with fresh oil, running your engine with low oil level can starve the timing chain tensioner of lubrication. Hydraulic tensioners rely on proper oil pressure to function. If the oil level drops too low, the oil pump may not maintain adequate pressure at the tensioner, allowing the chain to run loose and wear prematurely.

Bad Timing Chain Tensioner

A bad timing chain tensioner will lead to a loose timing chain. This puts a dynamic load on the chain as you start and stop the engine, increasing wear if it exceeds the tolerances the chain was designed for. Tensioners can fail due to worn springs in mechanical types or failed seals in hydraulic types.

High Mileage Wear

While timing chains are designed to last the life of the vehicle, this doesn’t always hold true for high-mileage engines. Vehicles with over 200,000 miles may experience chain stretch from years of use. The chain pins and links gradually wear, causing the chain to elongate and eventually fail.

Wrong Oil Viscosity

Using the wrong oil viscosity can affect hydraulic tensioner operation. If you use oil that’s too thin or too thick for your engine, it may not provide adequate pressure to the tensioner. Always use the oil weight specified in your owner’s manual to maintain proper timing chain tension.

Broken Timing Chain Guide

A broken timing chain guide may allow the chain to move out of position. This can cause the chain to jump teeth, skip timing, or in severe cases, come off the sprockets entirely. Guide failure is often the result of age, heat deterioration, or prolonged contact with a loose chain.

Manufacturing Defects

Some engines have known timing chain problems due to manufacturing defects or design flaws. Certain Ford 5.4L 3-valve engines, various Nissan VQ engines, and some BMW models have documented timing chain issues. If you own one of these vehicles, you may need to replace the timing chain earlier than expected, even with proper maintenance.

What Happens If the Timing Chain Breaks While Driving?

If your timing chain breaks while driving, the engine will immediately stop running and the vehicle will lose power. You won’t be able to restart or drive the car again until the timing chain is repaired or replaced.

It’s important to note that some engines may suffer severe internal damage when a chain breaks. This depends on whether the engine is an interference or non-interference design.

In an interference engine, the pistons and valves occupy overlapping space at different times. If the timing chain fails, the pistons and valves can collide, often bending valves, damaging pistons, or even ruining the cylinder head.

In a non-interference engine, the pistons and valves never occupy the same space, so the engine will stop but usually without catastrophic damage.

When Should a Timing Chain Be Replaced?

While timing chains are designed to last much longer than timing belts, they can still stretch or wear over time, especially on high-mileage engines. Replacement is usually only necessary if there are symptoms of failure or if related components (like tensioners or guides) have failed.

If a component in the timing chain assembly has failed (such as a guide, sprocket, or tensioner), it’s often wise to replace the entire timing chain assembly. This helps make sure that all parts wear evenly and reduces the chance of another failure soon after.

Some manufacturers may also recommend replacing the timing chain if it needs to be removed for other major engine work, such as a head gasket replacement, valve job, or front main seal service. If you’re doing the work yourself, check the factory service manual for guidance.
