Denmark, Danish Hi, I am to complete a form in English requesting me to state my "bank account name". (I am also requested to state the bank account address and bank account number). I would like to know if this bank account name refers to the name of my bank - or rather my own name? Thanks sdgraham

Oregon, USA USA English This sounds a bit weird in the context of banks with which I do business here in the U.S. - especially the bank account address part. For personal bank accounts, we normally don't "name" them such as we might name a pet. If it were I, I would ask the people who wrote the form. E

I've done so. The problem is that they usually reply very slowly to any query... panjandrum

My bank accounts have all three of these. For example: Bank account name: Mr P A N'jandrum = the name by which this account is known. I could have lots of accounts, some personal, others with business names, for example. Bank account address: 123 Willowvale Avenue, Bognor = the address required by anyone who wishes to write to my bank. Bank account number: 43210123 = the unique identifier for this particular account at this bank. I'm surprised the form didn't also ask for your bank's sort code :) P

New York City English - US My reaction is much like Panjandrum's. Here, a question about the "name" in relation to a bank account would be seeking the exact name on the account. For example, I might generally be known as PARLA JONES, but the name on my account might be PARLA M. JONES or PARLA MAY JONES or, if it's a joint account with a spouse, perhaps PARLA JONES and JOHN JONES. In the US, there would be no "Mr" or "Ms". Most major banks have many branches, so the address would be that of the branch where your account is maintained: YourBank, 123 Named Street, . . . E

Massachusetts, U.S. English - U.S. I think the "bank account name" is the official name by which you are known on this bank account. I could, for example, be E. G. Mont, Ed Mont, Eddie Mont, Edward G. Mont, E. George Mont, Edward George Mont, Sir Edward Mont, Viscount Mont of Massachusetts, or any number of other variations on (not) my real name. They have to know what version of your name you used with this account, since that may not be the same as the name you gave them on the form. I hope you are not filling out this form in response to a request from someone in Nigeria who hopes to share with you the $30,000,000 that was left when his uncle the late minister died, which he needs your help to get out of the country! :D Added in edit: cross-posted with Parla, but at least we agree! (We usually do.) Myridon

Indeed! Unless someone has published a directory of all banks sorted by their address, there's no practical way to discover what bank it is. The account number is no help. Either the bank's name or sort code (AE: routing number) is really needed somewhere. E

Denmark, Danish Thanks for your contributions. No, this is not such a 'Nigeria transaction' :) I have chosen to type the name of the relevant bank as the "bank account name" since the name of the "recipient" is stated in another field. Probably, it's also important for the money releaser to know the name of the recipient's bank as well as its address. But I hope the best :) Last edited: Feb 18, 2012 JulianStuart

Sonoma County CA English (UK then US) The "Wire transfer" form I use for transferring money has separate entries for, among other things, the following
  • Receiving Bank Name
  • Receiving Bank address (the address of the branch)
  • (Routing number or Swift code)
  • Account number at receiving bank
  • Name(s) on receiving bank account (registration) (Mine has the name of a trust, not my personal name)
  • Name of final beneficiary (perhaps the personal name of the recipient
The bank name and name on the account are quite different. However, your form seems to have a separate entry for recipient, so you may well be fine :D Contacting the institution is the best advice. You must log in or register to reply here. Share: Bluesky LinkedIn WhatsApp Email Share Link
