Officially known as an Adios Motherfucker, most people order this cocktail as the abbreviation AMF. This is perhaps to save time, but probably to avoid the indignity of shouting bilingual obscenities across the bar.

Black Russian Cocktail

Bright Electric Blue

The eye-catching AMF invariably inspires people to ask bartenders “hey, what’s that drink over there?” Apart from its sweet flavor and relatively high alcohol content, the AMF owes its popularity mainly to the enjoyment of being seen with one. Its bright electric blue color adds an energetic visual to the cocktail experience, telling everyone “This is a party and I’m all in.” Basically, the AMF is fun AF.

What Does the AMF Taste Like?

This unlikely mix of ingredients produces a drinkable combination of sweet fruit and tart, bubbly citrus.

Ingredients

  • ½ ounce vodka: Most
  • ½ ounce rum: Light rum works best.
  • ½ ounce gin: A softer floral gin may work best, as botanical flavors cut through sharply.
  • ½ ounce tequila: We recommend a white/blanco tequila.
  • ½ ounce blue curaçao : a sweet, bright blue, orange flavored liqueur. Pro tip: it’s pronounced KOOR-uh-sou, KYUR-ah-sow, or CURE-ah-soh. You’re saying it out loud right now, aren’t you.
  • 1 ounce sweet and sour mix: high-quality sweet and sour mixes are available from Cocktail Artist.
  • Lemon/lime soda: 7UP, Sprite,
  • Lemon wheel: as a garnish.

Note: Since the AMF is mixed with sour and lemon-lime soda, there’s no need to break the bank on buying liquor. If high-end products are your thing however, we say use whatever feels right.

How to Make an AMF

  • Fill a mixing glass with ice
  • Pour ½ oz Vodka
  • Pour ½ oz Rum
  • Pour ½ oz Gin
  • Pour ½ oz Tequila
  • Pour ½ oz Blue curaçao
  • Pour 1 oz Sweet and sour mix
  • Shake for 10 to 15 seconds
  • Strain into a Collins or highball glass filled with ice
  • Top with Lemon/lime soda
  • Garnish with the lemon wheel

Variations

The AMF is certainly a member of the Long Island Iced Tea family. A few more of its rowdy relations are listed below.

  • Using triple sec and Coca-Cola instead of blue curaçao and lemon/lime soda respectively makes a Long Island Iced Tea, the cocktail which undoubtedly inspired the AMF.
  • A Long Beach Iced Tea tops with cranberry juice instead of lemon/lime soda.
  • Replace triple sec with Chambord for a Grateful Dead.
  • Swap lemon/lime soda with pineapple juice for one version of a Hawaiian Iced Tea.Add an additional ½ oz of melon liqueur (like Midori) for a Tokyo Tea.
  • For a less boozy version, reduce the liquor amounts to ¼ oz each.

Substitutions

  • Out of sweet and sour mix but have access to lemons? Substitute mix with a mixture of ¾ oz simple syrup and ¾ oz lemon juice.
  • Fresh out of blue curaçao? Use triple sec and a few drops of blue food coloring.
  • Add a cherry garnish instead of (or in addition to) the lemon wheel, because why the hell not.

When to Serve an AMF

The AMF begs to be seen. Keep in mind, these cocktails are labor-intensive and require lots of ingredients. If planning to serve AMFs at your next event, we recommend either hiring a bartender or preparing a batch ahead of time. Be careful however—the AMF is a potentially dangerous combination of boozy and drinkable, which can turn guests a little unruly in an alarmingly short time.

  • Large, high-intensity events: especially if hosted at a large venue that can accomodate bartenders.
  • Hosting parties: The colorful AMF is appropriate for casual to high-energy parties. Large batches (minus the soda) may be prepared ahead of time so you’re not stuck behind the bar all night.
  • Outdoor activities: Golf outings, cookouts, by the pool, or just relaxing on the porch.

What to Serve with an AMF

The AMF is generally not associated with food or dining, but its sweet acidity does complement several dishes.

  • Medium-bodied meats, especially when prepared with citrus or mint, such as grilled chicken, lamb, or sweet and sour Chinese dishes.
  • Light to medium-bodied fish, such as ceviche, grilled fish, or spicy fish tacos.
  • Salty snacks, like salted nuts, pretzels, or potato chips.

The AMF goes down like candy but packs a punch. Always enjoy responsibly!
