News of Madeleine Mantock leaving the revived Charmed series recalls the time when original show star Shannen Doherty left at the end of Season 3. And if Doherty’s departure was at all connected to any friction between her and former co-star Alyssa Milano, well, Milano has now stated she regrets that.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Milano says that while she’s “proud of Charmed,” she has “some guilt about” treating Doherty as a competitor rather than a colleague.
"I would say we are cordial. I can take responsibility for a lot of our tension that we had, feeling that I was in competition rather than it being that sisterhood that the show was so much about," Milano said. "I have some guilt about my part in that."
Doherty, who played Prue Halliwell in the original series, left the show at the end of Season 3. Her character was killed off and replaced by long-lost sister Paige (Rose McGowan).
Milano admitted that the ice between the two began to thaw after she learned of Doherty's 2015 diagnosis with breast cancer, saying she checks in with Doherty “every couple of months” via direct messages. “I have great respect for her,” Milano said, adding that Doherty is a “great actress, loves her family so much, and I just wish I could've felt strong enough in who I was to recognize that then.”
Charmed, a show about sisters with magical powers, ran for three seasons from 1998 to 2006. The CW revived the show in 2018 starring Mantock, Melonie Diaz, and Sarah Jeffrey. (It has ... not exactly been well-received by original series cast members.) Mantock announced in July that she would be leaving the series after its third season.
