Three sisters discover they're witches in 'Charmed'

Long-running supernatural drama Charmed ran from 1998 to 2006 and amassed a huge fan base during that time. Now, the CW has remade the series with a brand new cast. The latest reimagining began on the CW on October 21 last year. The new version however features three new sisters named Macy, Mel and Madison Vera played by Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery respectively.

The series is set to start in the UK on E4 tonight (January 8) at 9pm.

In the original Charmed, the Halliwell sisters Phoebe, Piper, Prue were played by Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty.

In later seasons, Rose McGowan played a fourth sister, Paige Matthews.

McGowan joined the show in season four after Prue died in the season three finale.

Now with the new series starting, fans are asking why Prue left the show.

Why did Prue leave Charmed?

If we’re speaking just about the character, Prue left the show because she was killed by a demon.

Prue was the eldest sister and her power was telekinesis and later astral projection.

In her time on the show, she was the strongest witch and leader of the Power of 3 with her sisters.

The character is killed by a demon called Shax in the season three finale.

Shax was a powerful demonic assassin sent by the show;’s main antagonist at the time, the Source of all Evil.

The reason Prue was written out of Charmed was because Shannen Doherty decided to leave the show.

Many rumours at the time suggested that there was a feud between her and co-star Alyssa Milano.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in 2013, Doherty said: “There was too much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work.”

At ComicCon in 2015 she said she wanted to leave the show and that her departure would keep the series “fresh”.

She added: “Back then, I was much younger, I had a tendency to get very bored and as an actor, I always like to play different characters so playing the same character all the time was extremely difficult for me.”

Doherty has had a very public battle with breast cancer in recent years and Milano recently told E that the pair has put the feud behind them.
