Armor in Oblivion comes in two varieties: Light, Heavy. Clothing is a seperate category with its own set of unique benefits. This article will cover all the basic, unenchanted types of armor you can find in Cyrodiil. For unique, enchanted gear, check out our article on Unique Armor.

Note: The Base Armor values for all these armor pieces are the minimum possible value, which is then enhanced by your skill in that armor type.

Light Armor

Light armor offers roughly half the protection of Heavy Armor, but it weighs much less, allowing you to carry more loot that you find in dungeons without getting overencumbered. It also tends to cost much less, allowing you to purchase it in the store without breaking the bank. Better armor will appear as you progress through the game. Better armor is worth more, can absorb more damage without breaking, and will add more to your armor rating.

Type Level Available
Fur 1
Leather 3
Chainmail 6
Mithril 10
Elven 15
Glass 20

Fur Armor

OBR Armor Fur.png

Fur Armor is the first Light Armor set you'll find after the tutorial. It isn't much of an upgrade over the Rough Leather you get in the sewers, but it does have an interesting look.

Base Armor Value Weight ID
Fur Helmet 2 4 1 00024768
Fur Cuirass 5 15 5 00024766
Fur Gauntlets 2 4 1 00024765
Fur Greaves 3 8 3 00024764
Fur Boots 2 4 2 00024767
Fur Shield 2 8 2 00025056

Leather Armor

OBR Armor Leather.png

Leather Armor is a solid upgrade over the tutorial gear you get. You'll find it as early as level three on bandits, vampires, and other lightly armored humanoids.

Base Armor Value Weight ID
Leather Helmet 3 10 2 0002319C
Leather Cuirass 6 35 8 0002319A
Leather Gauntlets 3 10 2 00023199
Leather Greaves 4 20 5 00023198
Leather Boots 3 10 2 0002319B
Leather Shield 8 20 3 00025058

Chainmail Armor

OBR Armor Chainmail.png

Chainmail armor offers a slight improvement to armor rating over Leather armor. As a result, you'll most likely skip over it on your way to Mithril, which is available just four levels later at character level 10. It's only a little heavier, but it's worth much more Gold.

Base Armor Value Weight ID
Chainmail Helmet 3 25 2 0001C6D7
Chainmail Cuirass 8 90 9 0001C6D3
Chainmail Gauntlets 3 25 2 0001C6D6
Chainmail Greaves 4 45 5 0001C6D5
Chainmail Boots 3 25 2 0001C6D4
Light Iron Shield 9 45 4 00032D49

Mithril Armor

OBR Armor Mythril Armor.png

Mithril Armor offers a significant upgrade in Base Armor over Chainmail. The seemingly modest increase of +1 to every piece actually becomes much more significant as your Light Armor skill increases, meaning upgrading to Mythril is well worth it.

Base Armor Value Weight ID
Mithril Helmet 4 65 2 0002C104
Mithril Cuirass 9 225 11 0002C0FE
Mithril Gauntlets 4 65 2 0002C100
Mithril Greaves 5 115 7 0002C102
Mithril Boots 4 65 3 0002C0FC
Mithril Shield 11 115 4 000352BF

Elven Armor

OBR Armor Elven Armor.png

Only the Elven Cuirass, Greaves, and Shield offer a significant improvement over Mythril, but the value of every piece is much improved. Thanks to its light weight and increased value, you'll likely pick up a lot of Elven gear, if not just to hawk it to local merchants.

Base Armor Value Weight ID
Elven Helmet 4 170 3 000229A1
Elven Cuirass 10 600 13 0002299C
