The Beginner Crochet Potholder

While working on my “How to Crochet” series, I wanted to provide several beginner-friendly patterns to help new crocheters practice. Plus, I wanted to show beginners how many items they could make with just crocheted squares and rectangles.

This beginner crochet potholder pattern could not be simpler. You just crochet two rectangles and sew them together. Stitches and Abbreviations

CH – ChainHDC – Half Double CrochetST(s) – Stitch(es)

Gauge and Size

Gauge: 7 HDC X 5 Rows = 2 inchesFinished Size: 6 inches by 8 inches

Beginner Crochet Pot Holder Pattern

Notes:-Written in US terms.– I do not count my CH2, turning chain as a stitch.– Make 2 rectangles.

CH 24

Row 1: HDC in the 3rd CH from the Hook. HDC in each CH across. (22 HDC)

Row 2 – 20: CH2, turn, HDC in next 22 STs.

At the end of Row 20 fasten off and weave in your ends. Make a second rectangle.

Place one rectangle on top of the other. Using a long piece of yarn and yarn needle sew the two pieces together. Starting in a corner use a running stitch or whip stitch to sew around the edges of the rectangles. Check out this Crochet Sewing video if you don’t know how to sew.

When you get back to the first corner, you can use your yarn to whip stitch your wooden ring to the crochet potholder. Weave in you last ends and your potholder is complete.
