'Big Bang Theory's Sheldon And Amy To Sleep Together - TV Insider

Now that The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) are back together—after dating for five years—the newly reconciled science-loving couple will finally have sex in the December 17 episode. And, surprisingly, it’s Sheldon who initiates things when faced with the dilemma of what to get Amy for her birthday. “How much longer could we make this poor girl wait?” executive producer Steven Molaro says. “It seemed like the perfect way to resolve the journey they’ve been on, including the breakup, which started at the end of last season.”

After spending the entirety of Season 9 (to date) apart, the December 10 episode featured the duo’s much-anticipated reunion thanks to an earworm. When Sheldon couldn’t stop humming a mystery tune, it drove him to the brink of madness. But after he suddenly identified the song (The Beach Boys’ “Darlin”), he admitted that it reminded him of Amy and that they were meant to be together. Sheldon rushed over to Amy’s apartment and interrupted her date with Dave (Stephen Merchant) with a heartfelt speech and a very long kiss on the lips.

Both Parsons and Bialik were excited to take this next step in their characters’ storyline, but admit it was unexpected coming so quickly on the heels of the duo’s recent relationship woes. “We do a lot of things on our show, so it’s never really been about will Sheldon and Amy have sex?” Bialik says. “But it is a big deal, and Amy is shocked.”

Next week’s episode also features the return of Bob Newhart as Arthur “Professor Proton” Jeffries, Sheldon’s deceased childhood hero. He appears to Sheldon in a dream as a Jedi master who gives wise words of advice. “There is a fear of intimacy with Sheldon, so he’s worried he’s going to wreck this for her,” Parsons says. “Arthur tells him she’s the right person, so don’t worry about it.”

Parsons and Bialik bonded as body makeup was applied for their big scene. “Somebody was covering up my nipple,” Parsons says with a laugh. “Better yours than mine!” counters Bialik. “We’re both the palest people ever.”
