If you’re wondering how to smelt iron in Minecraft, the Blast Furnace is one of the fastest tools available for the job. Much like a standard Furnace, a Blast Furnace has the ability to smelt ores such as Iron, and Gold, as well as Chain Armor and other tools in Minecraft with one significant advantage -- a speed increase. So if you’re looking for a recipe on how to make a blast furnace, how to use it, or how to assign a villager as an Armorer, we have you covered in our Blast Furnace guide below, which has been updated following the Minecraft 1.18 update.

What is a Blast Furnace and What Does it Do

A Blast Furnace is similar to a standard furnace, but a significant difference is that a blast furnace will melt down ores twice as fast as a standard furnace would. Also, unlike a furnace, the blast furnace is only used for raw ores and Iron, Gold, Chainmail armor, and tools.

If you were to put food or anything else that isn’t one of the items listed above, it wouldn't do anything. It’s important to mention that you won’t get double the fuel or XP for using a blast furnace; it’ll only speed up the process of melting.

How to Make a Blast Furnace in Minecraft

Just like anything block in Minecraft, you’re going to need to get a few other resources before crafting a Blast Furnace. Listed below are all the items you will need to prepare a Blast Furnace, as well as a screenshot demonstrating the recipe placement.

How to Use a Blast Furnace in Minecraft

Using a Blast Furnace is pretty straightforward. You can fuel it using coal, charcoal, and a bucket of lava. If you put any Chain armor, or Iron armor, or tools inside of it, you’ll receive an Iron Nugget. But if you put in any Gold armor or tools, you’ll receive a Gold Nugget.

It’ll also work if you put any kind of ore into it as well. If you were to put in an Iron Ore, you’ll receive an Iron Ingot, just as you would a normal furnace. The same would go for Copper, Gold, Coal Ore, and Lapis Lazuli Ore.

Armorers are useful to have because you can trade items for armor. The more you trade with Armorer the more it’ll level up. You’ll also get stronger and better gear the higher level the Armorers is. Assigning a villager to the Armorer role is a relatively simple process. All you’ll need to do is find a villager in a village and go to its job block. Once you’ve done that, destroy the block and place the Blast Furnace near the villager. You’ll know that you’ve successfully changed the villager’s job when you see green stars appear around the villager as well as a change of clothes.

How to Smelt Iron in Minecraft

To smelt iron in Minecraft, place Iron Ore in the top slot of a Furnace or Blast Furnace, then add fuel (like Coal) to the bottom slot. The Furnace will output Iron Ingots after a few seconds. Using a Blast Furnace will double the speed.
