I wasn't sure abt this. Anyone else think this to be true or not?Original poster's comments (2)go to original poster's comments pageno reactions0Comment Advertisement | page continues below

Any cheese you buy in the grocery store is pasteurized. All commercially-packaged foods in this country are required by the FDA to be pasteurized. This one definitely beats all the crazy stories I've heard from this board so far. How absurd.

I may be wrong, but I believe processed cheese, like Velveeta is pasteurized. Plus, you generally cook or melt it don't you? It isn't something you just eat straight from the container, right?

  • member avatarjessioli Posted 12-07-11That is rediculous... I swear we should not be eating at all according to these types of studies. And I am SORRY but I NEED me some queso made with velvet and rotel.Advertisement | page continues below
  • mmadisonrylie3408 Original PosterPosted 12-07-11I was told the girl had too much through her whole pregnancy that it caused a still birth at 19 weeks.. isn't brei cheese unpasturized? And it's a soft cheese so it's not safe especially over 40 degrees? Idk. This is all stuff I've heard but can't get any real answers online.See all replies (1)

Most of the cheeses sold in the US are pasteurized (clearly I am not referring to those made from raw milk). All you have to do is look at the package.

My SIL could beat this one...she argued with me (bc clearly I am clueless about pregnancy) that yogurt was a no-go. Yogurt. Would not believe me until her dr told her different.

I always heard the caution was against unpasteurized anything, but with cheese it was specifically soft cheeses because if the cheese has not ALWAYS been kept at a specific temperature it is much easier for bacteria to grow in soft cheeses vs hard cheeses. Personally, I'd say it depends on how much you trust your source. A commercial grocery store vs a local farmer, etc.

At the grocery store if the lable says that it is pasturized it is safe to eat. I haven't looked at brie, but I have looked at a bunch and I have yet to find one here in the US that isn't pasturized. :-)

I don't think there are any studies for this one. I think someone was just talking out of their a** because they THOUGHT they knew something groundbreaking. If I made a list of things I've read in this group I shouldn't be eating while pregnant I would be dead by now. I can't live off water(even though I'm sure someone would say that's not OK, either).

OP-just so you know. My statements on it being so ridiculous and absurd and someone talking out of their a** weren't directed at you. I didn't want that to be unclear. It's towards whomever put the idea in your head about this. How ignorant. lol

It really does seem impossible to eat anything sometimes. EVERYTHING is harmful/bad/will kill your baby it seems. Sometimes I wonder how there is even a population of humans due to all the "dangerous" things out there we are capable of eating.
