Background[]

Once a member of the Blackfoot tribe, the first to follow Caesar as the foundation of his Legion, Canyon Runner served and climbed the ranks until he became a slavemaster, specializing in breaking those captured by the Legion and turning them into obedient slaves. He is a zealous follower of Caesar and firmly believes that conquering and enslaving people is the only way to save them from themselves by giving them purpose and virtue.[1][2]

If asked, he elaborates on the value of Cottonwood Cove as a staging area for Legion raids overseen by the commanding centurion Aurelius, and as such, the breaking of slaves does not occur there, so all he can do is assess the fitness of captures before they are sent over the Colorado[3] and process new captures brought in by raiding parties.[4] For interested parties that manage not to make an enemy of the Legion, he is willing to trade and sell any captures not yet made into slaves.[5]

By 2281, Canyon Runner is disappointed over the latest group of captures, members of the Weathers family (minus the patriarch Frank who escaped), finding them particularly problematic as not only are they poor candidates for slavery, with the exception of the daughter, but the matron also has a tendency to talk back. He would much rather sell them off for caps, but a lack of offers means he has to keep them penned up until they can be shipped out.[6]

Location[]

Canyon Runner can be found inside the Cottonwood Cove storage or patrolling the area around the building, close to the cage where the Weathers family members are kept.

  • Eye for an Eye
  • Left My Heart

Quests[]

  • Eye for an Eye: When completing the mission for Astor (and never betraying him to Aurelius), the Courier will either kill Canyon Runner themselves or indirectly by releasing the nuclear waste barrels from the Cottonwood overlook onto the Cove.
  • Left My Heart: The Courier can buy the Weathers off him for 300 caps; a Speech check can bring the price down to 150 caps. Alternatively, the Courier can just kill him to set the Weathers family free.
    • During Render Unto Caesar, Canyon Runner will not speak about the Weathers family. He only says to speak with Cursor Lucullus as Caesar does not like to be kept waiting.

Notes[]

  • Canyon Runner is one of the few Legion members who pronounce Caesar's name as the anglicized /ˈsiːzər/.
  • He is one of the taller characters in Fallout: New Vegas, similar to Orris and Lucullus.

Notable quotes[]

  • "Honestas, Industria, Prudentia - even the virtues of slaves are beyond the Dissolute on this side of the river."
  • "No, no, no - they haven't yet earned the right to be called 'slaves'! Those three in the pen are captures, nothing more."

Appearances[]

Canyon Runner appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

Shane Johnson voices Canyon Runner and Oscar Velasco in a distinct manner. Both frequently do not pause in between sentences occasionally.

References[]

  1. The Courier: "It doesn't bother you, enslaving people?"Canyon Runner: "Why would it bother me to enslave these wretches? They have no purpose, no creed, no honor. They live in pitiful squalor, undisciplined, intemperate. To enslave them is to save them - to give them purpose, and virtue. Honestas, Industria, Prudentia - even the virtues of slaves are beyond the Dissolute on this side of the river."(Canyon Runner's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "How did you join Caesar's Legion?"Canyon Runner: "I have Blackfoot in me, the first tribe that Caesar ever led in battle - the tribe that formed the Legion. If not for him, we'd still be living in tents or shacks, scavenging for food like animals. If we were alive at all."(Canyon Runner's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "By 'captures,' do you mean 'slaves'?"Canyon Runner: "No, no, no - they haven't yet earned the right to be called 'slaves'! Those three in the pen are captures, nothing more. I'm a Slavemaster, so I know what I'm talking about. Back at the Fort, I'd have those three half-broken and well on their way. But this is just a holding area, so all I do is assess their fitness and decide whether to send them on."(Canyon Runner's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "How did the Legion set up a camp on this side of the river?"Canyon Runner: "It was easy. The Colorado is narrow here, and when the Profligates abandoned Searchlight, there was no one to guard the crossing. It's just a small outpost, but we keep busy. Raiding parties go out, new captures come in."(Canyon Runner's dialogue)
  5. Canyon Runner: "Ave. Have you come to sell or trade for captures?"(Canyon Runner's dialogue)
  6. The Courier: "How much would it cost to buy the three 'captures'?"Canyon Runner: "It's a weak bunch, to be honest. I'd rather have extra currency to buy supplies or better captures off traders. There's a boy, too old to be trained as a Legionary. Normally they have to die, but he's too frail to make trouble. The old woman's dried up, but she could keep house or do gardening - if she can learn to keep her mouth shut. The girl's the only one of real value, young enough to breed, not hideous to look at. What's your offer for the lot?"(Canyon Runner's dialogue)
