My 9 week old has just woke himself up out of a dead sleep choking on clear bubbly saliva. Lots of it. Gasping for air with every inhale. I pounded his back to help cough it forward so I could wipe out as much as I could from his mouth so he wouldn't re-swallow it. Then I used a nasal aspirator to clear his airway a bit. I'm now SCARED TO DEATH to let him back to sleep in his crib. He's now on his tummy on my chest and has since choked up saliva twice in the last hour. :(
We recently changed formula to Similac for spit up because he was having large amounts spit up with every feeding with the Similac Advanced. He's not spit up once since we changed and doesn't seem to need to burp as often either. I'm not sure if this is what's causing the excessive amount of saliva or not.
I'm just simply scared to death that he will choke and I won't wake up to hear it!! :(
Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what were you instructed to do? Should I contact our PCP?21 CommentsNewest FirstOldest Firstmmimi100@kfoxx1982,I've experienced this 4 times in the past 2 weeks. my LO had his one month checkup yesterday and I asked his pediatrician about it and she said it sounded like silent reflux. her suggestion was to keep him upright when it happens and help clear his mouth using the syringe bulb. if it continues to get worst there is medicine to help with that.mmimi100@kfoxx1982,I've experienced this 4 times in the past 2 weeks. my LO had his one month checkup yesterday and I asked his pediatrician about it and she said it sounded like silent reflux. her suggestion was to keep him upright when it happens and help clear his mouth using the syringe bulb. if it continues to get worst there is medicine to help with that.bbrisaguadalupe2013@kfoxx1982,
This happened to us too! My baby was 2 weeks old and called 911 of courage when the paramedics arrived he was fine. But i still took him in to the hospital and he was there for 3 days... Under observation. The doctors told me to keep him elevated for at least 30 minutes after every feeding. I did not sleep for the following 4 months until his spit up issue resolved. I thought my baby was going to die. And i think he would've if i was right next to him at the moment..... I never left him alone.. We co slept until about 1 month ago. He was 9 months old.i became so paranoid.ccourtneyb52
You said you switched from Similac advanced, wondering if the other posters' infants were on the same formula?!
We are moving from Similac Supplementation to Advance in a few days. Currently she has a lot of gas and had spit bubbles on occasion.kkfoxx1982
So yesterday we spent 5 hours in the ER. He had 5 more choking episodes along with about 4 inconsolable screaming, crying with tears, fits. They tested for strep & RSV both I knew would be negative (since I've had a kiddo with those before) and they were. Then they took chest x rays to check for pneumonia. Those also came back negative. Going back Tomorrow for a sleep apnea test as well as barium swallow upper GI test with possible Ph Probe. Until then they have "diagnosed" him with GERD and will now be taking Nexium daily to control the acid and reflux.bbluemindi55
Similac Alimentum Formula and sleeping in the pack and play helped tremendously after our scary episode at 4 weeks. LO is now 4 months and doing much better. He has occasional spits that are out his nose and mouth. He gets upset but is not responding like when he was younger.bbluemindi55
Sorry meant Rock and Playssweetkayon@kfoxx1982,
I had this problem too when my baby was younger. Always keep a suction close by at nights, make sure the baby sleeps slightly elevated this helps a lot. I had my baby sleep in a bassinet up to 4 months because of this choking issue. Always suction babies mouth after ever feeding.
This bassinet had a recliner which was perfect, good luck.CChilerito@courtneyb52,
I supplement My 7 Week old Baby Girl... We Dont have that problemllosborne1212@sweetkayon,
I had this problem when LO was 1 month old. It went on until shortly after 2 months. Doctor put him on Zantac and suggested elevating him. It has only happened once since October and concerned about it happening at daycare. Is your LO in daycare, if so, what instructions were they given?
