Portuguese - Brazil In Almodóvar's film (Tacones Lejanos) we read the following dialogue: "Cuanto ofrecéis?" -- "Mil cocos". Is "coco" a word for money, dough? Or does it means simply "coconut"? Actually, some men want to buy a girl, and the stepfather asks "How much will you offer me". So...Vanda

Ubá, BRASIL Português/ Brasil I'll let the answer for those who have already seen the movie. At first sight it may be coconut, though. Some tribal societies used cattle and other things considered valuable as dowry.ILT

México México - Español/Castellano From the context I'm pretty sure it means money, but here's what a site on Spanish slang has to say: coco: (España) 1) (sust. m. invariable en género) persona inteligente. 2) (sust. m. invariable en género) persona fea. Esa mujer es un coco--nadie quiere salir con ella. Let's wait for a native of Spain to confirm any of thisdiegodbs

Madrid Spain-Spanish I've never heard the word "cocos" in Spain meaning "money". The only word I know, and it's not used anymore since the change from pesetas to euros, is "cucas". Cucas = pesetas. LLucíayMiguel

Coco has other meanings, apart from the fruit, but does not mean money. Cheers. K
