Types of Dental Bridges
Traditional Bridges
Cantilever Bridges
Maryland Bridges
Implant-Supported Bridges
This is the most popular type of dental bridge.
Suitable for
- Anyone who has 2 strong, natural teeth on each side of the lost tooth
How it works
- Your abutment teeth (teeth beside the lost tooth which will be supporting the bridge) will be prepped to receive dental crowns: teeth enamel is removed
- A bridge consisting of 2 crowns and a pontic will be put in place
Pros
- Strong enough to replace molars
- Lightweight, able to chew comfortably
- Can last a long time if good oral hygiene is maintained
Cons
- Requires tooth enamel to be removed, compromising protection
Suitable for
- Anyone who has either 1 strong natural tooth or 1 implant beside the lost tooth
How it works
- Same process as traditional bridges but instead of having 2 crowns, there is only 1 crown
Pros
- Lightweight, able to chew comfortably
Cons
- Requires tooth enamel to be removed, compromising protection
- Reduced support compared to traditional bridge
Suitable for
- Anyone who has strong, natural front teeth adjoined to the lost tooth
- A temporary fix for a healing dental implant or
- While waiting for adulthood before installing an implant
How it works
- The pontic may be made of porcelain or resin with comparable gum material
- Metal wings will be attached to the pontic on both sides
- The metal wings will be bonded to your adjoining teeth on both sides
Pros
- Minimal contouring is required to the abutment teeth
- Cost-effective
- Efficient
Cons
- Metal wings may cast a shadow on the natural tooth/dislodge
This is similar to the previous types, except that the bridges are supported by dental implants instead of crowns.
Suitable when
- You have 1 or more missing teeth
How it works
- An implant can be installed for every missing tooth or every other missing tooth, depending on how many there are
- The bridge is then supported by implants
Pros
- No damage to adjoining natural teeth
- Suitable for people with metal allergies
- Comfortable
Cons
- Implant failures may occur
- Surgery is required

What Are The Differences Between Dental Bridges and Implants?
| Dental Implants | Dental Bridges | |
|---|---|---|
| Impact on Natural Teeth | Does not put strain on other teeth | Removes enamel from natural teeth, compromising protection |
| Number of Teeth Replaced | Can be used to replace more than one missing tooth | Requires healthy, natural adjacent teeth for support |
| Longevity & Maintenance | Requires minimal maintenance; considered a permanent solution | May need to be replaced every 10 - 15 years |
| Procedure | Requires surgery | Does not require surgery |
| Treatment Duration | Takes longer: 3 - 4 visits | Can be done within 2 - 3 visits |
| Jawbone Requirement | Requires strong jaw bone for higher success rate | Less painful if you have severe damage or jaw bone loss |
| Cost | Costs more | Costs less |
Procedure for Dental Bridges
Step 1: Anaesthetic Injection Applied
For vital teeth, your gums will first be numbed with local anaesthetic in order to minimise any pain or discomfort.
Step 2: Shaping of Tooth
Your tooth will then be shaped to precise proportions and an impression of it is taken.
Step 3: Creation of Crown
Thereafter, your crown is fabricated based on your natural tooth shape.

FAQs About Dental Bridges
FAQs
Do I need to get dental bridges?
A dental bridge is a treatment for replacing missing teeth, in the presence of healthy supporting teeth.
If you are experiencing any of these dental concerns, you should consult your professional dentist for the most suitable treatment.
How long does the procedure take?
The number of dental visits will depend on the technology used at the dental clinic. A conventional treatment would require 2 – 3 visits and this excludes the initial consultation.
How long does a dental bridge last?
Most dental bridges are able to last more than 10 years with proper care.
Are there any risks or complications associated with dental bridges?
After any dental procedure, it is crucial to maintain good oral hygiene.
In the case where you fail to do so, it may lead to
- Gum infection
- Tooth decay
Also, if the bridge does not fit perfectly, it may break or crack which will cause infection and painful sores.
Therefore, an experienced dentist should be consulted for the procedure.
