What makes them all different?.. is the aftermarket pipes? Sort by Oldest first Oldest first Newest first Most reactions #2 · Jan 15, 2007 They all sound quite similar. A bigger engined monster may sound 'bigger' but it's not such a great difference. Yes, the pipes are the key. In stock form they all sound very docile. The cheapest thing you can do is modify (or core) the stock cans to let some of the sound out. This works quite well. If you're still not satisfied, then change them for an aftermarket system. There are plenty of great ones available and different opinions about each. The best way to decide is to actually hear them in the flesh if you can. #3 · Jan 15, 2007 Some would say that the 916 had a different sound than the 998, probably due to the Testastretta vs the Desmoquattro. If you listent to the 1098, it has the classic crack of the L twin. I think the 999 kinda sounds efficiently softer. Pipes really make all the difference of course, but an open airbox and/or open clutch compliment that orchestra. #4 · Jan 15, 2007 From what I've heard, capacity and engine type is one thing, and system or exhaust type is another - and all add up to slight variations in sound. I used to have a big twin valve M900S with carbon termi slip ons, jet kit and air filter - it was farkin loud as - and IMO the termis - and especially the carbon termis - have a slightly raspier - or sharper sound to them - as opposed to some of the other systems i've heard. For example, a friend had an S4 with Staintune slip-ons at the same time - and his bike was mellower soudning - a bit more bass to it than mine. But i've heard that the 2 valvers sound a bit "bigger" than the 4 valves... Now - here in Bankok - there are a few fellas that ride and with quite a diversity of sounds: 1. S2R with full arrow titanium - deep, mellow baritone sound - I like it a lot. Really booms when opened up. 2. S2R with full termi carbon - sharper edged sound, louder on idle, but not as booming when opened up. 3. S4R with carbon system - as above - but louder - and more progressive (sounds that way anyway). 4. 999R with carbon termi system - now this thing really BARKS!!! it is very hard edged, and literally snaps with instant aggressive sound on throtle response..It's an animal. 5. S2R1000 with full Arrow carbon. Loud, smooth and deep sound. One thing to note - all sounds are mellow somewhat under load. When you're just sitting there revving it, it sounds kinda edgey. I reckon under load - they get that baritone sound happening - like when you really open the throttle - or progress from half to full open. Now that sound is really something. BTW - I hate being behind that 999R when the throttle gets blipped - which is everytime I'm behind it!!! ::) Face fulla stuff. Sounds awesome tho. [thumbsup] #5 · Jan 15, 2007 the pitch between the 2 valve and the 4 valve motors is definitely different. as is Testaretta vs Desmoquattro. testa motors sound a little more "tame" to me. engine design, size, cam timing, etc. all make a difference #6 · Jan 16, 2007 The older 4-valve engines sound better to me. I prefer to listen to an early S4R with pipes over any 2-valve Monster. My 888 with totally stock intake and exhaust sounds so nice that it's truly a shame I have to wear earplugs (for the wind noise) when I'm going very far on it. At the last "La Ducati Days" in October, the winner of the best sounding Ducati was this 1992 851 with proper old pipes on it: Image #7 · Jan 17, 2007 I think my M750 sounds better than my S4. jerry #8 · Jan 17, 2007 This site will give you an idea of what different monsters with a variety of exhaust setups sound like. http://sites.rapidus.net/sebmorin/ I prefer Ferracci carbons myself 8)> - HK #9 · Jan 17, 2007 I think two valves throb like thunder, four valves crack like lightning. They both make my toes curl up in my boots, as Little Richard likes to say. David B. #10 · Jan 17, 2007

Where was that photo shot? The fellow on the left is Mike C, from my neck of the east coast woods. But not to thread jack - biggest differences seem to be rendered by the pipes. I had a 620 w/ Sil carbons that had a very deep noted thrum to them. A S4 up the street sounded very similar at idle and constant RPM, but when the throttle was rolled on there was a difference. The larger motor had slightly deeper 'Brrrowop' noise to it. Now, I have a 900 w/ carbon Termis. I'd say there is a slightly higher, raspier note, despite the bigger displacement. Of the two, I preferred the Sil sounds. A couple of the local S2R 1ks are running ARC Reverse megaphones - stainless. At idle they sound a bit tinny, not so much to my liking. But when the throttle comes on, the tinny becomes a real angry rasp that has a good character to it. #11 · Jan 17, 2007

Mike's son Adam lives in Santa Cruz. He came out west for a visit when the Ducati event was held. It was held in the Santa Cruz mountains in the town of La Honda, which was renamed La Ducati for the day. The date was October 8, 2006. #12 · Jan 18, 2007
