Paulsso P Hello, I just got a 2017 SuperSport S with 8300 miles. How noisy is normal for the engine? Mine sounds like a bag of bolts, particularly between 2500 and 3000rpm. Sounds like knocking and it's lumpy too. Starts and idles no problem, no overheating, oil is ok, high revs are ok. It definitely doesn't like being lugged, a bad Harley habit. Bear in mind my other bike is a twin cam Harley with an open primary and gear driven cams, so I'm well used to a mechanical cacophony! #1 · Aug 29, 2021 Hello, I just got a 2017 SuperSport S with 8300 miles. What you are hearing sounds normal. #3 · Aug 29, 2021 Thanks for the reassurance, I don't mind agricultural, I ride a Harley  1 Reply #4 · Aug 29, 2021 The desmodromic valvetrain makes a lot more noise than a conventional one with valve springs. With springs the hole valvetrain ist under tension the hole time, with desmo there is a rocker for opening and one for closing. So one of them is unloaded while the other one is doing its job. Due to a little necessary slack it can make noise. This is at least my explanation for the rattling. In 3rd gear around 50km/h it appears more present because the exhaust flap makes the exhaust a little quiter. Mine doesn't like low revs either, riding 30km/h in second gear is not really smooth. Hoped a new chain would solve this because the old one had some stiff links, but it didn't. Seems to be normal, the bike was in testridden by the workshop several times for different little issue in the last two months. #5 · Aug 29, 2021 They are noisy motors, it’s probably very normal. I ride with ear plugs 95% of the time and am always shocked at the noise it makes when I don’t. It’s one of the many reasons I do wear them most of the time!!! #6 · Aug 29, 2021 I have orthoplastic earplugs (fitted to my ears) with filters. The filters dampen the lower noises but you can still perfectly hear voices, sirens etc. So I hear more of the desmo noise than without the earplugs. #9 · Aug 30, 2021
jr85 said: I too think this is normal behaviour. Mine has always done it, it's like a clack-clack noise coming from the engine at 2000-3000 rpm. "Agricultural" - love it! Very accurate. Click to expand...
Yes, that's the noise, as long as it normal I'm fine with it. 0 Reply #8 · Aug 30, 2021 Having owned several Ducati's, including dry clutch models, they definitely have a unique clatter. They don't like low RPM's either...when you think you should shift...don't lol. I do find the 939 engine is one of the noisiest, but all Ducati normal. #10 · Sep 1, 2021 The only noise that annoys me on mine is a little top end clatter when cold. It goes away when the oil is warm. My son's Hyper does the same. I guess it's a 939 thing. #11 · Sep 3, 2021 As pointed out, it sounds like a tractor on low rpms. In case you still feel it is very noisy, check if air is leaking from silencers joints. There is a joint between 2nd and 3rd part of silencer (below the bike), and sometimes due to low clearance, it comes off and allows for a leak. I had that problem in my bike and once Ducati ASC fixed it, bike is much quieter now. Ducati ASC charged for 45 mins of labor. It is still louder than inline engines, but in tunnels, it is more fun!! Hope this helps. #12 · Sep 3, 2021 Thanks for the tip, I'll check it. 0 Reply Insert Quotes Post Reply
