How to download the app, link your number, and set up Relay UK.

1. Download the app

You can download the Relay UK app for iOS devices and the Relay UK Desktop app for Mac computers from Apple's App Store, or download Relay UK for Android devices from the Google Play Store. 

For Windows 10 PCs, you can Get Relay UK from the Microsoft Store.

 

• Available on iOS 12.5 and upwards

  1. Open the App Store on you iPhone or iPad.
  2. Search for the Relay UK app and look for the Relay UK icon.
  
  3. Download the App.
  4. Open the App and you’re ready to ‘Get Started’

  By downloading the Relay UK app, you agree to our Terms and conditions.

  Tip: ‘Allow’ the Relay UK app to send you notifications to automatically receive app updates.

  Go to Relay UK in the App Store

• Available on Android 9 and upwards*

  1. Open Google Play on your Android device.
  2. Search for the Relay UK app and look for the Relay UK icon.
  
  3. Select to install the App.
  4. Open the App and you’re ready to ‘Get Started’

  By downloading the Relay UK app, you agree to our Terms and conditions.

  Tip: ‘Allow’ the Relay UK app to make and manage phone calls for you.

   

  * Relay UK is not supported on Chromebook

  Go to Relay UK in Google Play

• Available for Windows 10 versions from May 2019 (version 18362 or later)

  1. Open the Microsoft Store on your PC
  2. Search for the ‘Relay UK’ app under Windows apps and look for the Relay UK icon
  
  3. Select ‘Get’ and install the App.

• Available for Intel-based Macs running macOS Big Sur and later and Apple Silicon Macs on macOS Monterey and later

  1. Open the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Search for the Relay UK Desktop app and look for the Relay UK icon.
  
  3. Install the App.
  4. Open the App and you’re ready to ‘Get Started’

  Tip: ‘Allow’ the Relay UK Desktop app to send you notifications to automatically receive app updates.

2. Linking your number

The first time you open the app, you’ll need to link your phone number so that the app can connect to the calls you make and receive. 

• 1. When you first open the Relay UK app on your iPhone or iPad and have agreed to the Terms and conditions, you’ll be prompted to link your number. You can link your mobile number, or another number and have the option to add more numbers later.
  2. Enter the phone number you want to link, into the app.
  3. Check the number entered and tapon ‘Next’.
  4. You’ll now see a message asking you to verify the link by making a free call to 0800 500 888.                                   
  5. Call the 0800 number from the phone you want to link. Once connected, you can disconnect the call almost straight away. It only takes a moment.
  6. You’ll see a message telling you that you’ve successfully linked the number.
  7. You only need to link an individual phone number to the app once - and the same number can be linked to the app on other devices too. 
• 1. When you first open the Relay UK app on your Android Phone or tablet and have agreed to the Terms and conditions, you’ll be prompted to link your number. You can link your mobile number or another number and have the option to add more numbers later.
  2. If you’ve installed the app on your phone, your mobile number should be shown in the Phone Number box.
  3. If you want to link to a different number, select ‘Another device’ and enter this number in the Phone Number box.
  4. Check the number entered and tap on ‘Next’.
  5. You’ll now see a message asking you to verify the link by making a free call to 0800 500 888  
  6. Call the 0800 number from the phone you want to link. Once connected, you can disconnect the call almost straight away. It only takes a moment.
  7. You’ll see a message telling you that you’ve successfully linked the number.
  8. You only need to link an individual phone number to the app once - and the same number can be linked to the app on other devices too. 
• 1. Open the Relay UK app on your computer and click on ‘Get started’.
  2. Once you’ve read and agreed to the Terms and conditions, you’ll be asked to link your number to the app. You can link your mobile or fixed line number and have the option to add more numbers later.
  3. Enter the phone number you will be using to make and receive calls.
  4. Next, make a short call to 0800 500 888 from the phone number you want to link to the app. This call is free of charge.
  5. The call will be answered by the Relay UK system, which gives out an electronic beeping sound.
  6. A message will pop-up in the app to confirm ‘Number linked successfully’, so you can now end the call on your phone. 
    Tip: You only need to link an individual phone number to the app once. You can link more numbers later - and a number can be linked to the app on other devices too.

3. Setting your communication preference

Deaf, hard-of-hearing, or speech-impaired?

For all versions of the Relay UK app, select how you want to communicate. You’ll be prompted to do this after you’ve linked your number and before you start using the app, and it will help our Relay Assistants better handle your calls.

You can choose from:

-       I’ll be typing and reading (suitable if you’re deaf or hard-of-hearing)

-       I’ll be typing and hearing (recommended if you’re speech-impaired, as this mutes the line)

-       I’ll be speaking and reading (use if you’re deaf or hard-of-hearing and can talk clearly)

If you want to change your communication preference later, just choose the one you want under ‘Settings’ and ‘Relay preferences’.

4. Option to Back up & restore your data

If you’re using the Relay UK app on an iPhone, iPad or Android device*, you can back up your Favourite phrases, Relay preferences and Saved calls to your cloud account. This allows you to restore this data if you install Relay UK to a new device, or if you need to reinstall to your existing device at a later date.

Allow the app to back up data before you finish setting up, or change this in ‘Settings’ under ‘Cloud backup’ at a later time.

This feature isn’t currently available on the Windows 10 Desktop or Mac computer versions of the app.

 

* Relay UK is not supported on Chromebook

5. Done

You’re now set up and ready to go!

Dial 18000 to connect directly to a Relay Assistant and 999.   

Save your typed conversation by pressing the Save Conversation button.
