Thanks. I had tried that and it didn't do anything. But there was also an iBooks upgrade that had appeared, so I clicked that to see if it would download. Doing that seemed to kick El Cap back into gear; now they're both downloading. 🙂
Thanks!

I have this exact problem and there's nothing else to upgrade than the OS itself so I would like to know how to make it restart.
I just upgraded my macbook air quick and easy, never paused though, but my imac doesn't seem to restart no mater what I do and I can't even delete the "el capitan" icon from the applications folder, I never got to download a single megabyte -.-'
If its there a link to download out the ps store please point me out because other than that its dead :\

Likewise. I've restarted, clicked the resume button too many times, waited and waited all day, nothing happens. The best I can get is eventually it will say "waiting..."
My best guess is that the server that handles this is overwhelmed currently.
Wish I would get that iBooks update at least - my ibooks is borked currently.

I have the same problem. Started downloading it, then remembered that I needed to do a backup first. Following day try to get it going again to no avail!!!
How do I get it restarted?

Also having this issue. Lame.
I hope the "servers are busy" theory is right and we can resume shortly.

Try the following:
- open app store- enter 'purchased'
- look for any app you had installed and it's not anymore and click download
Doing this will most likely trigger the OS to start downloading as well, it did for me. It's a pain having to go through such thing just to get the OS.

App Store > purchased > Check for Unfinished Downloads , in m case it was OS X Yosemtie and OS X EL Capitan ( I clicked on OS X Yosemite) and the it worked.

Good idea. I had the same issue as everyone else: download was paused.
So I went into the App Store, found an app that I had purchased, clicked on it to install and voila! El Capitan started again.

It worked for me. That's a terrible bug in AppStore. Apple, fix it! now! The workaround is not a solution. ⚠

I have the same issue. I had to click OS X Yosemite to re-download again in order to resume OS X EI Capitan. I paused Yosemite and Captian also paused as well. Looks like I have to download both them at the same time.

Open App Store, 'Store' > 'Check for unfinished downloads' ... That should kick start the El Capitan download. I had the exact same problem until i did this
