I love the name Effie as a shortened name, but what is this actually short for or what could it get away with being short for?

Oooo I was about to try and find this out myself! I will keep an eye on your post and let you know if I find anything!!!

    I have found this:

The girl's name Effie is pronounced EF-ee. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "well-spoken". Pet form of Euphemia. First used in the 1860s.

Effie has 10 variant forms: Effemie, Effemy, Effi, Effy, Efthemia, Ephie, Eppie, Euphemia, Euphemie and Euphie.

I would have said Euphegenia, as in Mrs Doubtfire, but apparently there are more. Laughing

I quite like Effie on it's own, but I would spell it Ephie.

all the names that it is actually short for are horrible lol xxx

I agree Jess they are truly awful imo. Effie is nice on it's own though, there won't be many in her class at least!

with a name like Euphegenia i dont think the poor child would be able to say her own name til she was at high school lol. I do like Effie though but my surname is Lee and not sure if that goes!!!

Jenny gave the technical and correct answer, it is an abbreviated pet form of Euphemia.  However, there is an Effie in the tv programme 'Skins' and it's short for Elizabeth.  No idea how they derived this as Elizabeth can be shortened to Eliza, Liz, Lizzy, Beth, Liesel, Libby, Bess, Bessie, Betty, Betsy, Elspeth, Elspie, Elsie, Lisa, Bettina, Elise, Lisette and Babette but not anywhere other then skins have i ever seen it shortened to Effie.
