As a matter of principle, I don’t believe in naming-for-the-nn. But, I’m considering making an exception for Effie. (Or Efi - still trying out spellings). FWIW, she will have some Greek heritage and I have a bunch of Greek names up my sleeve that contract to Efi, but they tend to sound long and complicated in English. Babe will be born and will reside in N America. Bonus for Greek names, but not required.Original poster's comments (2)go to original poster's comments pagereplied with hug1Comment Advertisement | page continues below

  • hHeckabee Posted 02-23-18I knew a Greek family that uses the nn Effie, it was short for Efthymia. None of the women use the full name, just the nn Effie. I say just use Effie, it’s lovely and sounds fine on its own.
  • member avatarTlucas775 Posted 02-23-18Effie is how I would spell it. I think it's cute alone, doesn't need to be a nickname. I honestly cannot think of any longer names that would work with it as a nickname.
  • member avatarShanamahtopoeia Posted 02-23-18In English it was originally short for Euphemia. Nowadays I'd assume Josephine, Persephone, or Stephanie (or just Effie on its own).See all replies (1)Advertisement | page continues below
  • member avatarnenabaker.jr Posted 02-23-18Stephanie? There is a little girl in our neighborhood with name. I haven't heard it used in awhile.
  • ddolpy Original PosterPosted 02-23-18EfthymiaEfrosini EfterpiEvdokiaEvgeniaEvridikiOk I think I might be talking myself out of it.... Of those mentioned so far, possibly Efrosini (name of baby’s great aunt, who was a total badass and also stunningly beautiful in her youth) and I also really like Persephone although I hadn’t thought of it contracting to Effie. Hmm..More thoughts and suggestions welcome!
  • member avatarwyngirl'smom Group OwnerPosted 02-23-18Persephone would be my favorite way of getting Effie (although I don't love Effie at all).

  • member avatarRoisin49 Posted 02-23-18Euphemia was my first thought. You could do a first and middle which lend itself to those sounds.Esther Fiona nn EffieOr, use a first and middle with initials FE to get nn Effie.Fiona Esther nn Effie

For what it's worth, I'm on the talk you out of it train. Effie just seems to fall on the Ellie/Evie/Emmy/etc. trend but doesn't sound quite as pretty to me. I do like Persephone on its own!

It's so hard for me to get on board with Effie, as someone who uses the phrase "what the eff" a lot, and it just sounds so close to "F me," I just can't. It's cute, don't get me wrong, but I always feel weird saying it. What about Etta?
