“Tall elm trees made the park shadowy and dark, and it would have been a good hangout, but we preferred our vacant lot” (Hinton, 47) After reading this quotation, the reader will have been set in time and place. In The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton uses a profound description of the setting to establish mood in the text to provide readers the “feeling” of the story. In a novel such as The Outsiders, it is of major importance that the author establishes the setting and mood for the novel’s plot to develop. This is where setting marries mood in a story. In any novel, the author uses the element of setting in order to establish a connection between the reader and the text. In The Outsiders, the global setting is Tulsa, Oklahoma. The city is known to have the highest crime rate in the state. Hinton was born in Tulsa and she experienced what it was like to undergo high school rivalry. During her high school years, she was a friend to many Greasers and Socs. Hinton considered herself an “in between” in the dilemma. Choosing Tulsa’s high school as the setting influences the main …show more content…
“Nobody was around at two-thirty in the morning, and it was a good place to relax and cool off. I couldn't have gotten much cooler without turning into a popsicle.” (Hinton, 47) Ponyboy and Johnny rendezvous at the local park at two-thirty in the morning. Just by looking at the time frame in which they decide to meet up, the reader automatically begins to draw conclusions about what could happen. Time is a major key to set mood intensity in a text. For example, events set at midnight create depth and tension. On the contrary, events set at ten a.m. on a Sunday morning create a sense contentment and peace of mind. Could this be the reason why Hinton’s chapter four takes place at night in a lonesome park? Will there be any sudden deaths or will the boys in this scene spend the night smoking in the

Hawthorne describes a cold and gray day. This description gives the reader a sense of isolation as well as slight depression. However, the mention of a slight breeze that ruffles the canopy of the forest just enough to let in little flickers of sunshine conveys a fleeting ray of hope that seems to coexist with the gloominess in the scene. In many scenes during the book, moods or prevailing feelings are established through descriptions of the natural surroundings of the characters. This aspect of Hawthorne's writing makes the book deeper and more emotional.

The story revolves around the greasers and Socs. The Socs are the west side rich kids, they wrecked houses and “threw beer blasts for kicks”. While the Greasers were the east side kids, they “drove old souped-up cars, held up gas stations and had gang fights once in a while.” One of the conflicts the characters face is man vs man, which is because the greasers and Socs don’t get along, this is because they feel superior to each other. They both had different ways of lives, they did different things for fun, and they did not understand each other. This conflict was later resolved towards the end of the story when Ponyboy speaks to Randy about no longer fighting after Bob’s death.
