  • Setting
The book, The Outsiders, is based in the year, 1965, in the town, Tulsa, Oklahoma, which is actually the home town of the author, S.E Hinton. Tulsa is a cowboy town, and Sodapop and Darry are involved with horses (Soda's horse Mickie Mouse). Also, Dally's "rodeo partner" Buck Merrill is described as a cowboy who dug Hank Williams. Most of the book is spent outside, and on the streets. Back in the 1960's, rumbling, or gang fights, was a way of life, and many people carried "switchblades" and "heaters". Both the Socs and the Greasers loved to hang out at the drive-in, which was a popular entertainment spot among teenagers in the 60's. Some of the places mentioned in the novel are the Curtis house, the hospital, the abandoned church, the drive-in, the vacant lot, Dairy Queen, the gas station, the school, the fountain, the convenience store, and Tim Shepherd's house.
