The Pennsylvania Supplement Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) has been benefiting families in the U.S. state since it came into effect.

Many families have been struggling to make ends meet even more than normal thanks to the rapidly rising cost of living across the country and much of the world.

The perfect storm of the Coronavirus pandemic followed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine has seen gas prices and shipping prices go through the roof.

The knock-on effect hits the poorest families first and the most severely, which is why programs like SNAP have had to be brought into effect.

Pennsylvania SNAP benefit

The good news is that recipients are going to continue to get an extra monthly emergency payment through until October 2022.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SNAP recipients have been receiving extra monthly emergency allotments since April 2020.

On July 15, 2022, the Biden administration extended the federal emergency declaration due to the pandemic for an additional 90 days; therefore, the SNAP emergency allotment payments will continue through October - due to an automatic extra month provided by the program rules.

Pennsylvania SNAP benefit: Who is eligible?

The extra payment will bring households that are only eligible for a partial benefit up to the maximum benefit amount for their household size.

Households that are already eligible for the maximum benefit amount will receive an extra 95 dollars per month. Households that are close to the maximum (less than 95 dollars away) will be guaranteed emergency allotments of 95 dollars per household.

The maximum benefit for a household size of one is 250 dollars and it then rises with each person to 430 dollars, 658 dollars, 835 dollars, 992 dollars etc until the upper limit which is 1,504 dollars for a household of eight. There is 188 dollars per additional person.
