For many years, I have strived to live by the “Five Agreements” I adopted from these two outstanding and highly recommended books: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. I found that once I internalized and truly understood these agreements, my emotional, spiritual and physical well-being thrived.

I am defining agreements for this purpose as “contracts you keep with yourself.” Think of these personal agreements like affirmations - powerful statements that can lift you up, empower you and take you toward your goals. If your self-talk and thoughts are negative, then the agreements you have with yourself can tear you down and anchor you to your past.

We all have agreements (contracts with ourselves) based on our programming, beliefs and past experiences in our lives. Many of us have limiting beliefs that can truly hold us back and deter our growth.

Our beliefs are generally formed and influenced from these sources:

  • Experiences in the past
  • Personal or professional perceptions
  • Habitual stories you continue to tell yourself
  • What your parents or significant role models told you was true
  • Religious, professional, legal, social, political dogma and doctrine

The power of our beliefs and how they affect our destiny and life can be summed up in these wise words from Mahatma Gandhi:

Your beliefs become your thoughts,

Your thoughts become your words,

Your words become your actions,

Your actions become your habits,

Your habits become your values,

Your values become your destiny.

A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.

Personal and professional growth always starts with awareness. Become aware of your beliefs and agreements, and then decide if you want to make any changes.

So today and everyday, I encourage you to consider and then live by these Five Agreements if they are in alignment with your beliefs and values.

I AM IMPECCABLE WITH MY WORD

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

I DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

I DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement you can completely change your life.

I ALWAYS DO MY BEST

Your best is going to change from moment to moment. It will vary due to your energy level and health at any given moment. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, and regret.

I LIVE IN THE NOW

You have ONE moment, this moment. The past is behind you, the future has not yet arrived. Being present is powerful. Be here NOW. Be Still. The next moment is already on its way. The past doesn’t change. Put your attention on today, this moment, and free yourself.
