Ford is launching a second generation 6.7 L Power Stroke® V8 diesel for their MY 2015 F-Series Super-Duty pickups. From MY 2016, the new engine will be also available on the larger, F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks. The new Power Stroke V8 delivers 440 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque, up from 400 hp and 800 lb-ft in the previous generation of the engine.
The MY 2015 F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks with the upgraded engine and chassis will deliver best-in-class horsepower, torque and towing capacity, according to Ford. The new engine will be featured across all Super Duty models from F-250 to F-450, with first 2015 pickup trucks to be available in the Spring 2014.
In the F-750 medium-duty trucks, the Ford’s own 6.7 L Power Stroke engine will replace the Cummins 6.7 L ISB engine (rated at 385 hp & 850 lb-ft). The new F-650/F-750 trucks will be also available with Ford’s 6.8 L V10 gasoline engine, carried over from the current models.
Key modifications on the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel are its compacted graphite iron (CGI) engine block and reverse-flow layout—a design that places the exhaust inside the engine’s V-shape, while the air intake is positioned on the outside. This configuration can result in improved turbocharger performance:
- Shorter airflow from the exhaust system to the turbocharger sitting between the engine’s cylinder banks improves turbo responsiveness.
- Positioning the turbo inside the engine’s valley helps isolate the engine’s hottest temperatures, improving performance and efficiency, while also reducing noise, vibration and harshness.
Other changes include a larger turbocharger for faster air displacement and more power and new injector tips that produce finer atomization of fuel for lower emissions and reduced noise, vibration and harshness.
The 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel engine is built at the Ford’s Chihuahua Engine Plant in Mexico. Production of the MY 2016 F-650/F-750 medium-duty trucks will be moved from Mexico to the Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, near Cleveland.
