Ingredients

for 24 servings

  • 1 white cake, or cake of your choice
  • 5 lb white fondant (2 ¼ kg)
  • 4 cups buttercream frosting (460 g)
  • white rum, or vodka
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring
  • gel icing
  • rock candy, ranging from white to dark teal/blue, or colors of your preference

Preparation

  1. Cover the cake in smooth layers of fondant.
  2. Cut a geode shape out of the side of the cake.
  3. Spread buttercream frosting all along the inside of the cut.
  4. Mix rum with black food coloring until it reaches your desired shade of gray. Paint a thin, dark line around the edge of the cut.
  5. Apply a row of gel icing down the center of the cut.
  6. Press rock candy into the piping gel, starting with the darkest shade Continue piping gel icing around the rock candy and pressing in lighter colors and smaller pieces of rock candy as you move further toward the edge of the cut.
  7. Slice and serve.
  8. Enjoy!
