Why I Love this Recipe

It’s so nice to have some ham steak recipes that don’t include the skillet. Assemble this easy casserole, and your family will applaud!

Ham Steak and Potatoes in the Oven

I have a freezer full of ham steak, and I am always searching for new ham steak recipes. Usually, I make ham steak one of two ways: broiled in the oven with a brown sugar topping or in a skillet with maple gravy. Both ways are yummy, but I was really wanting a creamy ham steak and potato casserole.

And then, it came to me as I was strolling the aisles of the grocery store. Ham steak in the oven topped with scalloped potatoes makes the perfect meal. I took inspiration from my Mom’s Pork Chop Potato Casserole. It’s so simple to make just a handful of ingredients.

Ham Steak and Potato Casserole

This easy casserole only has 4 ingredients with one of them being optional! It doesn’t get much easier than that. Layer your ham steak on the bottom of the baking dish and then top with a layer of sliced potatoes. Then to make the ham steak casserole hold together, pick out your favorite type of cream soup and layer it over the potatoes.

Here’s the big decision, do you want a cheesy ham steak and potato casserole or a traditional ham steak casserole. I make it both ways depending on my mood.

If you decide to go for a cheesy ham steak casserole, use your favorite type of shredded cheese. Sprinkle it over the top at the very end and let it sit in the oven that has turned off until the cheese is ooey, gooey and melted.

Ingredient List for Ham Steak and Scalloped Potatoes

  • Ham Steak (smoked)
  • Potatoes, washed, peeled and sliced
  • Cream Soup (cream of celery, cream of mushroom or cream of chicken)
  • Shredded Cheese (optional), cheddar of Colby Jack

Ham Steak Dinner for Two or More

The great thing about ham steak and scalloped potatoes is that it can be made into a ham steak dinner for two or it can be made for a huge crowd or family. Basically, use enough ham steak and potatoes for the number of people you are feeding.

If you are wanting a ham steak dinner for two, use one single ham steak, a couple potatoes and one can of cream soup. Or, you can easily add more pieces of ham steak and more potatoes; just use additional cans of cream soup to cover the potatoes. You really can’t screw this up, I promise.

How to Use Leftover Ham Steak?

If you’ve got leftover ham steak or potatoes, dice them up, and stir them into a hearty breakfast skillet meal. Add melted butter to the frying pan, and then layer up the leftovers with peppers and onions, and fry it to your desired texture. It’s delicious! You could even add bacon or sausage.

Recipe FAQs

  • Can you eat ham steak right out of the package? Yes, as long as the ham steak is smoked not fresh or raw. Smoking is a type of cooking process.
  • Use as many or as few pieces of ham steak and potatoes as your family eats. For a small family, use one can of cream soup and an 8×8 inch baking dish. For a larger family, add more ham and potatoes, use two cans of cream soup and use a 13×9 inch baking dish.
  • Any type of cream soup works; Pick one with your favorite flavors. I usually use cream of celery, cream of mushroom or cream of chicken.
  • Cheese is completely optional. If you want a cheesy ham steak and potato casserole, cheddar cheese or Colby jack works great.
  • Check out our Amazon Store for our favorite ingredients.

What side dish goes with ham steak?

Ham steak pairs great with any vegetable such as broccoli, green beans, carrots and corn. Another popular side dish is southern mac and cheese. Or, serve it up with a simple side salad. Bake up a package of biscuits, and dinner is served.

What to season ham steak with?

Season ham steak as you would with an entire ham, boneless ham or bone-in ham. Popular seasonings include brown sugar glaze, Dijon mustard or yellow mustard, maple syrup, honey or any other sweet glaze.

Is a ham steak already cooked?

Yes, hams and ham steaks are smoked which means they’ve already gone through a process in which they are cooked. Do not use fresh ham which isn’t pre-cooked.

When is ham steak done?

Since smoked ham steaks are pre-cooked, you only need to heat the ham to your desired hotness to be considered “done”. It’s not a matter of heating the ham steak to a certain temperature and time combination; instead, it’s heating the ham steak until it’s hot and takes on the flavor of the dish you’re making.

How do you heat up a ham steak without drying it out?

Instead of using a skillet, layer ham steak up with sliced potatoes and cream soup. Cover it tightly with aluminum foil, and bake until the potatoes are fork tender. This oven method ensures you won’t have a dry ham steak.
